Michigan Residents Face Charges for Meddling in 2020 Election with Fake Electors Scheme

13:20 21.07.2023

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has announced felony charges against 16 Republicans who are accused of acting as fake electors in an attempt to overturn the state's electoral votes during the 2020 presidential race. This marks the first time charges have been filed against individuals accused of using the political system to help former President Donald Trump overturn the will of the voters.

The charges include forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery, and conspiracy to commit election forgery, each carrying a possible penalty of five to 14 years in prison. The group of fake electors, which includes prominent political figures in the state such as Kathy Berden and Marian Sheridan, allegedly gathered at the state's Republican Party headquarters on December 14, 2020, the same day the legitimate electors were set to cast their ballots. They signed their names to false documents casting the state's 16 Electoral College votes for Trump. These documents were then sent to the National Archives and Congress, where they were counted as part of the official tally.

Michigan, a crucial battleground state, awards its 16 Electoral College votes to the presidential candidate who wins its popular vote. In this case, Joe Biden won the state. The actions of the fake electors aimed to undermine the integrity of the election and circumvent the will of Michigan voters, according to Attorney General Nessel.

These charges are part of a broader effort by Trump and his allies to overturn the outcome of the 2020 election. Similar schemes were attempted in Nevada, Georgia, and Arizona, where groups signed false certificates asserting that Trump had won those states' elections. However, these efforts were ignored by federal officials, and Congress ultimately reaffirmed Biden's victory.

The investigation into the false electors scheme is ongoing, as are investigations in Georgia and Arizona. A federal investigation led by special counsel Jack Smith is also examining attempts to thwart the transfer of presidential power. Trump himself revealed on Tuesday that he had been informed he is the target of the federal probe.

The charges against the fake electors in Michigan highlight the importance of upholding the integrity of elections and ensuring that the will of the voters is respected. The alleged actions of these individuals not only undermined public faith in the electoral process but also violated the laws by which elections are administered in the state. This case serves as a reminder that attempts to manipulate or overturn election results will be met with legal consequences.
