Arctic Freeze Grips US: Millions Face Below-Zero Temperatures and Storms

04:05 15.01.2024

Millions of Americans are facing treacherous subfreezing temperatures as Arctic storms sweep across the United States, leaving four people dead and causing widespread power outages. The Northwest has been hit particularly hard, with tens of thousands of residents left without electricity. In addition, the South has experienced heavy snowfall, while the Northeast is grappling with blizzard conditions that have even forced the postponement of an NFL game.

The severity of the cold weather has prompted weather warnings and advisories for approximately 95 million people nationwide, with wind chills plummeting below zero Fahrenheit (minus 17 Celsius). Forecasters predict that the bitter cold will extend as far south as northern Texas, while areas such as Montana and the Dakotas will experience wind chill readings as low as minus 70 degrees (minus 56 Celsius).

Authorities are urging individuals to take precautions and stay indoors, emphasizing the rapid onset of frostbite in such extreme conditions. The South Dakota Department of Public Safety issued a statement on Sunday highlighting the dangers and urging residents to prioritize their safety.

Buffalo, New York, is bracing for heavy snowfall, with forecasts predicting accumulations of 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 centimeters). The severe weather conditions have led officials to postpone the highly anticipated NFL playoff game between the Buffalo Bills and the Pittsburgh Steelers from Sunday to Monday. The city is currently facing strong winds of 30 mph (48 kph), accompanied by snowfall at a rate of 2 inches (5 centimeters) per hour.

Efforts are underway to clear the snow from the field at Buffalo's Highmark Stadium, with workers utilizing shovels and trucks to combat the heavy accumulation. However, the Bills organization has discouraged volunteers from assisting with the shoveling, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the travel ban on area roads.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, a Buffalo native, expressed her astonishment at the severe weather conditions, posting a video clip on X showcasing the whiteout conditions in the city. She humorously remarked, "Looks like a pretty good day to not have a football game."

Despite the adverse weather conditions, acts of kindness and goodwill have emerged. Offensive tackle Ryan Van Demark of the Buffalo Bills shared a heartwarming video on Instagram, capturing fellow lineman Alec Anderson assisting a stranded motorist struggling with icy road conditions. Van Demark praised Anderson as a Good Samaritan in the brief clip, highlighting the unity and support within the community during these challenging times.

Zack Taylor, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in College Park, Maryland, warned that parts of the Northeast would experience intense snowfall and extreme winds, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph (89 kph). Taylor explained that these conditions were contributing to near-blizzard conditions in certain areas, further exacerbating the challenges faced by residents.

As the nation battles these Arctic storms and the subsequent dangerous cold, it is crucial for individuals to prioritize their safety, heed the warnings and advisories, and support one another during this unprecedented weather event.
