Alabama firefighter dies after being shot at fire station; $45K reward offered

21:55 22.07.2023

Birmingham, Alabama is mourning the loss of firefighter Jordan Melton, who tragically passed away on Monday, just five days after being shot at a fire station in the Norwood neighborhood. The 29-year-old firefighter was in critical condition following the shooting, while his colleague, Jamal Jones, was in serious condition. Melton's death has left the community in shock and has prompted officials to offer a $45,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the shooting.

Melton had recently graduated from the recruit academy, making his untimely death all the more devastating. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin described Melton as young, vibrant, and "full of life." In a heartfelt statement, Woodfin asked the community to join him in supporting Melton's grieving family. "They've lost a son, a brother, a friend, and colleague," Woodfin said. "Know that we're exhausting every resource to find answers and justice for Jordan's loved ones. Jordan paid the ultimate price for his service to our city, and we will not let that sacrifice be in vain."

The Birmingham Fire & Rescue Service Department also paid tribute to their fallen firefighter, expressing their deep sorrow and stating, "You are forever in our hearts." The department has not provided an update on Jones' condition, who is still recovering from his injuries in the hospital.

Investigators believe that a man or a group of men entered the fire station building through an open bay door on the morning of July 12 and targeted the firefighters. Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond stated that a motive has not yet been determined. The shooting has left the community stunned, as it is extremely unusual for a fire station to be targeted in such a manner.

As the investigation continues, the city is rallying together to find justice for Melton and support his grieving family. The $45,000 reward serves as a reminder of the urgency to capture those responsible for this senseless act. The loss of Jordan Melton has left a void in the Birmingham community, but his memory will be honored as a brave and dedicated public servant who gave his life to protect others.
