Security Guard Fatally Shot in Portland Hospital Attack

20:26 24.07.2023

In a tragic incident that unfolded on Saturday morning, a security guard was killed and another person was wounded when a gunman opened fire inside Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center in Northwest Portland, Oregon. The shooting was reported at approximately 11 a.m. Pacific time, according to Portland Police Bureau Sgt. Kevin Allen.

The security guard, identified as Bobby Smallwood, was immediately rushed to a trauma center but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries later in the day. The hospital also confirmed that a staff member who was injured in the shooting is currently in stable condition. Thankfully, no patients were wounded during the incident.

Following the shooting, law enforcement officers swiftly initiated a manhunt for the suspect, who was considered armed and dangerous. The hospital was immediately put on lockdown, and nearby establishments, such as the Fred Meyer grocery store, were evacuated and searched as well. Despite extensive efforts, the suspect was not located inside the grocery store.

After an intense search, the suspect was eventually spotted by officers from multiple law enforcement agencies while driving a vehicle in the city of Gresham, located just east of Portland, approximately 15 miles away from the hospital. During a traffic stop, officers opened fire on the suspect, resulting in his death at the scene. The suspect's identity has not been released, and it remains unclear whether he was armed or if he fired on the police. Fortunately, no officers were injured during the encounter.

As the investigation into the motive behind the hospital shooting continues, authorities have not yet provided any details on the circumstances that led up to the incident. The shelter in place order that was implemented for the hospital has since been lifted, but the hospital remains in a lockdown situation as a precautionary measure.

Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center, part of the Legacy Health system, expressed profound grief over the loss of Bobby Smallwood, the security guard who tragically lost his life. Kathryn Correia, Legacy Health president and CEO, offered unwavering support to Smallwood's loved ones, patients, and staff members affected by the tragedy.

The Portland Police Department commended the coordinated efforts of the hospital staff and law enforcement in responding to the incident. Police Chief Chuck Lovell acknowledged the sadness felt by the Legacy Health staff and extended his sympathies to the affected employees' family, friends, and coworkers. Lovell also expressed gratitude for the exceptional work carried out by hospital staff and law enforcement during the incident.
