Miami-Dade Police Chief Stable After Shooting Incident on Florida Highway

00:03 25.07.2023

According to authorities, the incident occurred on Sunday evening when officers responded to a call at the Florida Sheriff's Association's Summer Conference about a male who had pointed a gun at himself. Upon arriving at the Marriott Westside, where the conference was being held, officers encountered Ramirez on the 12th floor. He assured them that he was not a danger to himself or others and was subsequently released at the scene by Tampa police.

However, shortly after this encounter, Ramirez drove off and shot himself in the head while inside the couple's car, with his wife present. She immediately called 911 to report the incident. The shooting took place on I-75, south of Tampa, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Ramirez was transported to a Tampa area hospital, where he underwent surgery on Monday afternoon. The Miami-Dade County Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava, confirmed that Ramirez was in stable condition but emphasized that his well-being was the top priority.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister provided further details, stating that the shooting occurred during a domestic dispute between Ramirez and his wife. The exact circumstances leading up to the incident remain unclear, and the reports from local media regarding Ramirez's wife being present at the time have not been independently confirmed.

Ramirez, a 27-year veteran of the Miami-Dade police agency, oversees the largest police department in the southeastern United States. He had been attending the law enforcement conference in Tampa and was highly regarded by his colleagues and peers. U.S. Senator Rick Scott, who was also present at the conference, praised Ramirez as a respectful and dedicated individual.

The Miami-Dade Police Department, along with the Florida Highway Patrol, is currently investigating the incident. They have asked the community to keep Ramirez in their thoughts and prayers. The department has also assured the public that there is no threat to the community and that no one else was injured.
