Pastor Arrested for Cold Case Murder of Young Churchgoer

20:09 26.07.2023

On August 15, 1975, the small township outside of Philadelphia was rocked by a tragic event that would haunt the community for decades. Eight-year-old Gretchen Harrington was on her way to Bible camp when she was kidnapped and brutally murdered. The case remained unsolved for over four decades, leaving the community in a state of fear and uncertainty.

However, on Monday, authorities finally made a breakthrough in the case. The Delaware County District Attorney's Office announced the arrest of an unexpected suspect - David Zandstra, the former pastor of one of the camp's host churches at the time of the incident. The 83-year-old man was charged with Harrington's murder after he recently confessed following the discovery of new evidence linking him to the crime.

The allegations against Zandstra are shocking and disturbing. The District Attorney's Office revealed that a witness had come forward with a diary from that era, which contained a chilling entry made one month after Harrington's disappearance. In the entry, the witness speculated that Zandstra may have been responsible for attempting to kidnap another girl in the area.

The witness, who remains unidentified, also disclosed that she was groped by the former pastor during a sleepover at his home, just days before Harrington went missing. The witness, who was only ten years old at the time, happened to be best friends with one of Zandstra's daughters. Her account adds another layer of evidence against the former pastor, painting a disturbing picture of a man who may have been involved in multiple crimes against children.

The Pennsylvania State Police played a crucial role in reopening the case and focusing on Zandstra as a person of interest. Corporal Andrew Martin, in particular, was credited with his dedication to bringing justice to Gretchen Harrington's family. After eliminating other potential suspects, Martin and State Police Trooper Eugene Tray interviewed Zandstra near his home in Georgia on July 17.

During the interview, Zandstra voluntarily spoke to the officers, fully aware that his words could be used against him in court. When confronted with the new witness information, Zandstra confessed to his alleged involvement in the kidnapping and murder of Gretchen Harrington. Trooper Tray described the suspect as relieved, as if a weight had been lifted off his shoulders.

According to the criminal complaint, Zandstra admitted to driving his green Rambler station wagon, a now-extinct model made by Nash and then AMC, on that fateful day in 1975. Prosecutors revealed that he had a habit of picking up children to take them to the Bible camp hosted by his congregation, Trinity Church Chapel Christian Reform Church.

The charges against Zandstra are severe and reflect the gravity of his alleged crimes. He faces charges of criminal homicide, murder in the first, second, and third degrees, kidnapping, and possession of an instrument of crime. The alleged crimes occurred in Marple Township, located approximately ten miles west of Philadelphia.

The arrest of David Zandstra has brought a mix of closure and sorrow to the community that has carried the burden of Gretchen Harrington's unsolved case for decades. As the legal proceedings unfold, the hope is that justice will finally be served for Gretchen and her grieving family.
