US family found dead in forest while attempting to live off the grid

02:13 27.07.2023

Last summer, tragedy struck a family seeking to escape the chaos of modern-day America. Two sisters and a 14-year-old boy embarked on a journey to live off the grid and find solace in the remote wilderness of Colorado. Their dream of disconnecting from civilization ended in a heartbreaking discovery, as their decomposed and partially mummified bodies were found at a campsite in the Gunnison National Forest.

The deceased individuals were identified as Christine Vance, 41; Rebecca Vance, 42; and Rebecca's teenage son, whose name has been withheld due to his status as a minor. The bodies were recovered near a tent, approximately 9 miles from Ohio City, Colorado. Gunnison County Coroner Michael Barnes, who conducted the autopsy, revealed that the bodies showed signs of malnourishment, with two found in the tent and one outside.

While the exact cause of death has yet to be determined, authorities suspect that starvation, freezing temperatures, or carbon monoxide poisoning may have played a role. Barnes suggested that the group may have attempted to make a fire inside the tent to stay warm, leading to the potential carbon monoxide poisoning. The family likely began camping in July 2022 and perished sometime during the winter. Barnes noted that their bodies were emaciated, indicating possible malnutrition.

Family members shared that the Vance sisters and the teenager were determined to live "off the grid" and escape the troubles of the world. Rebecca Vance, in particular, had expressed her desire to protect her son and her sister, Christine, from the perceived dangers of society. Her fears escalated during the pandemic, prompting her to believe that a better life awaited them in nature.

Initially, Christine Vance had no intention of joining her sister and nephew. However, she changed her mind, believing that their chances of survival would improve if they stuck together. The teenager, described as a smart and caring individual who had been homeschooled, eagerly joined his mother on this adventure. The three family members provided little information to their stepsister, Trevala Jara, only mentioning that they were going "off the grid" without specifying the exact location.

As the harsh winter settled in, the family struggled to endure the unforgiving conditions. They resorted to burning dry sticks and lighting fires inside their tent for warmth. However, the heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures proved insurmountable. Their bodies were discovered by a hiker on July 9, prompting a thorough investigation by authorities.

The campsite revealed the family's attempt to build a shelter, with empty food cans, books, and a makeshift restroom area scattered around. It appeared that they had relied on prepackaged food items, surviving on soup and other canned goods. Their campsite was devoid of any vehicles or firearms.

Rebecca Vance's stepsister, Trevala Jara, recounted their family's story with a mix of sadness and caution. She acknowledged her sister's desire to protect their loved ones from the perceived dangers of the world but emphasized the importance of not letting fear and doubt consume one's life.

The tragic fate of the Vance sisters and their nephew serves as a reminder of the challenges and risks associated with living off the grid. While the allure of escaping civilization may seem enticing, it is crucial to approach such endeavors with careful planning and consideration.

As the investigation continues and toxicology reports are awaited, the community mourns the loss of three lives that were cut short in their pursuit of a different kind of existence. The story of the Vance family serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities of human desires and the harsh realities of nature.
