New Hampshire Nurse and Child Abducted in Haiti: Faith-Based Organization Reports

10:40 30.07.2023

A New Hampshire woman and her child have been kidnapped in Haiti, according to a faith-based humanitarian organization where the mother works as a nurse. Alix Dorsainvil and her child were abducted Thursday morning near Port-Au-Prince, according to the organization, El Roi Haiti. They were abducted from El Roi Haiti's campus while conducting community ministry services. El Roi Haiti president and co-founder, Jason Brown, expressed his concern and described Dorsainvil as a deeply compassionate and loving person who considers Haiti her home and the Haitian people her friends and family.

Dorsainvil, originally from New Hampshire, had made the permanent move to Haiti to serve as the organization's community nurse. She is married to Sandro Dorsainvil, the founder and director of El Roi Haiti, with whom she shares a child. The organization praised her dedication and hard work, stating that she had worked tirelessly to bring relief to those who are suffering.

The reported kidnappings came on the same day the U.S. State Department ordered non-emergency government personnel and family members to leave Haiti as soon as possible due to the high levels of kidnapping, crime, civil unrest, and poor healthcare infrastructure. The State Department warned that abductions have become increasingly widespread throughout the country, with Americans regularly being targeted. They stated that kidnappers may use sophisticated planning or take advantage of unplanned opportunities.

Haiti has been struggling to contain violence and chaos as heavily armed gangs drive a humanitarian crisis that has displaced tens of thousands of people. Kidnappings for ransom, gang rapes, tortures, and murders have become a frequent occurrence in the country. The State Department advised Americans not to travel to Haiti due to the dangerous security situation and infrastructure challenges.

The U.S. State Department is working closely with Haitian authorities and their U.S. government interagency partners to ensure the safe return of Alix Dorsainvil and her child. The safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas is a top priority for the U.S. government.
