Mets GM denies rebuilding as Max Scherzer trade to Rangers finalized

00:28 31.07.2023

In a surprising move, the New York Mets have traded their star pitcher Max Scherzer to the Texas Rangers. The trade was officially completed on Sunday, with the Mets receiving utility man Luisangel Acuna and cash considerations in exchange for Scherzer. The deal was announced after it was initially reported on Saturday night.

The trade has raised eyebrows, as the Mets entered Sunday seven games out of the final wild-card spot in the National League. However, New York general manager Billy Eppler denied that the team was rebuilding, stating that it was a strategic decision to enhance the farm system and shift owner Steve Cohen's investment from the team to the organization.

Acuna, who was among the best prospects in the Rangers' system, was hitting .315 with seven home runs at Double-A Frisco before the trade. Eppler praised his versatility and revealed that Acuna will start in Double-A Binghamton.

Scherzer, who joined the Mets in 2022, has been a key player for the team, with a 20-9 record, a 3.02 ERA, and 294 strikeouts in 42 starts. He made his last start on Friday, earning a win over the Washington Nationals with seven strikeouts in seven innings. He is expected to make his first appearance for the Rangers by Wednesday.

The trade was contingent upon Scherzer waiving his no-trade clause, which he agreed to. The Rangers, who are currently in first place in the American League West, sought to add depth to their starting rotation after losing a pitcher to a season-ending injury. Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, brings a wealth of experience and skill to the team.

For the Mets, this trade signals a shift in their approach. After a disappointing season, the team sits in fourth place in the NL East. The decision to move on from Scherzer could be the start of a wider sell-off for the organization. Despite his slightly underwhelming performance this year, Scherzer is still considered a top-of-the-rotation pitcher and is expected to bolster the Rangers' staff.

Scherzer's contract includes a player option for next season, which he is expected to exercise. This made the trade more challenging for the Mets, considering his underperformance and the significant financial commitment. However, the team ultimately decided to part ways with the veteran pitcher.

The trade comes just days after the Mets traded closer David Robertson to the Miami Marlins, further fueling speculation that the team is entering a sell-off phase. Scherzer expressed his disappointment with the trade of Robertson and acknowledged that the team's poor performance contributed to the front office's difficult decisions.

With Scherzer now gone, the Mets may continue to make further moves as they navigate the rest of the season. Other players, including Justin Verlander, Tommy Pham, Mark Canha, and Brooks Raley, could be potential trade chips for the team.

As the Mets continue to reshape their roster, it remains to be seen how these trades will impact their performance and future plans. The team will face the Washington Nationals on Saturday, while the Rangers will take on the San Diego Padres in their next game.
