New Hampshire Nurse and Child Kidnapped in Haiti, Faith-Based Organization Reports

01:31 31.07.2023

In a shocking turn of events, a New Hampshire woman and her child have been kidnapped in Haiti, sending shockwaves through the faith-based humanitarian organization she worked for. Alix Dorsainvil, a nurse employed by El Roi Haiti, was abducted along with her child on Thursday morning near Port-Au-Prince while conducting community ministry services. The incident has left the organization deeply concerned.

El Roi Haiti, the organization where Dorsainvil worked, expressed their profound worry and sorrow over the incident. Jason Brown, the president and co-founder of El Roi Haiti, described Dorsainvil as an incredibly compassionate and loving person who considered Haiti her home and its people her friends and family. Originally from New Hampshire, Dorsainvil had made the permanent move to Haiti to serve as the organization's community nurse. She is married to Sandro Dorsainvil, the founder and director of El Roi Haiti, with whom she shares a child. The organization commended her dedication and hard work, emphasizing that she had tirelessly worked to bring relief to those in need.

The reported kidnappings occurred on the same day that the U.S. State Department issued an order for non-emergency government personnel and family members to leave Haiti immediately. The decision was made due to the alarming levels of kidnapping, crime, civil unrest, and the country's poor healthcare infrastructure. The State Department warned that abductions have been increasingly widespread throughout Haiti, with Americans often becoming targets. Kidnappers are known to employ sophisticated planning or take advantage of unplanned opportunities.

Haiti has been plagued by violence and chaos as heavily armed gangs continue to drive a humanitarian crisis that has displaced tens of thousands of people. Kidnappings for ransom, gang rapes, tortures, and murders have become disturbingly frequent occurrences in the country. In light of the dangerous security situation and infrastructure challenges, the State Department strongly advised against traveling to Haiti.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the U.S. State Department has pledged to work closely with Haitian authorities and their U.S. government interagency partners to ensure the safe return of Alix Dorsainvil and her child. The safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas remain a top priority for the U.S. government, as they strive to bring an end to the distressing situation unfolding in Haiti.
