Colts' Jonathan Taylor denies back injury, seeks trade amid contract drama

14:13 31.07.2023

Indianapolis Colts star running back Jonathan Taylor has requested a trade, according to sources familiar with the situation. Taylor, who led the NFL in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in 2021, is seeking a contract extension before his rookie deal expires at the end of this season. The request comes amidst reported drama between Taylor and the Colts, with tensions rising between the running back and team ownership. The rift between Taylor and the Colts' ownership appears to have grown on Sunday, as the team is now considering putting Taylor on the non-football injury list, which would allow them to withhold his salary. ESPN reported that Taylor failed his physical due to a previous ankle injury and an alleged back injury. The Colts were said to be unaware of the back issue until Taylor reported it last week. Taylor took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to deny the reports of back pain, stating, "Never had a back pain," and "Never reported back pain. Not sure who 'sources' are, but find new ones." Taylor's alleged injury and trade request come on the heels of team owner Jim Irsay's comments about the running back market. Irsay expressed his belief that some player agents were acting in bad faith by complaining about how much running backs earned with the franchise tag designation. Taylor had previously spoken in support of running backs in the NFL earning more money than what the franchise tag could offer. The Colts' owner stated that he wanted to make sure Taylor was healthy and hoped that he would have an outstanding year. Taylor played in 11 games last season, rushing for 861 yards and four touchdowns. In 2021, he led the NFL with 1,811 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns, earning his first Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro honors. Taylor's trade request comes as the Colts are preparing for the 2023 season with rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson. The team's ownership has not indicated whether they will entertain trade offers for Taylor. However, Irsay sent a text message stating, "We're not trading Jonathan... end of discussion. Not now and not in October!" Despite the tensions between Taylor and the Colts, Irsay expressed his hopefulness for the upcoming season and stated that he takes the entire salary cap into consideration when dealing with contract situations. Taylor has one year remaining on his rookie deal and is set to earn approximately $4.304 million in 2023, ranking 18th among running back salaries for the upcoming season.
