'Fire Whirls' Fuel California Wildfire Fury

01:05 01.08.2023

In a weekend of intense wildfires, firefighters in California's Mojave National Preserve battled "fire whirls" as a massive blaze engulfed the area. The York Fire, which began near the remote Caruthers Canyon area on Friday, crossed the state line into Nevada on Sunday and spread smoke eastward into the Las Vegas Valley. The fire, which has burned tens of thousands of hectares of desert scrub, juniper, and Joshua tree woodland, was mapped at approximately 284 square kilometers on Monday with no containment.

One of the notable phenomena witnessed during the fire was the occurrence of fire whirls, also known as fire tornadoes. These spinning columns of fire form when intense heat and turbulent winds combine. The vortexes were spotted on the north end of the York Fire and ranged in height from a few meters to several hundred meters, with varying rotational speeds. While they may be fascinating to observe, the National Park Service emphasized that fire whirls are dangerous natural phenomena that can occur during wildfires.

The cause of the York Fire is still under investigation, and crews expected to face limited visibility due to the thick smoke generated by the fire. Meanwhile, to the southwest, the Bonny Fire burned about 9.3 square kilometers in Riverside County's rugged hills. The blaze, which was about 20% contained on Monday, led to the evacuation of over 1,300 people near the community of Aguanga, known for its horse ranches and wineries. One firefighter sustained injuries in the blaze.

The immense intensity of the California fires has been fueled by high temperatures and fierce winds. The York Fire, in particular, has charred over 110 square miles of land. The fire's rapid spread can be attributed to the dry fuel acting as a ready ignition source, combined with the erratic winds. The incident update noted that the fire exhibited extreme behavior, with long-distance fire runs and high flames. Despite the extensive damage, no structures were reported to be threatened.

As firefighters battled the blazes, a tanker was deployed to make fire retardant drops over the York Fire, aiding in containment efforts. However, with zero containment and the risk of gusty winds and thunderstorms, there is a possibility of renewed growth in the coming days. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection warned of the heightened risk and urged caution.

The situation remains critical as authorities continue their efforts to bring the fires under control and protect the communities at risk. The determination of the cause of the York Fire and ongoing firefighting operations will be crucial in mitigating the impact of these devastating wildfires.
