Mike Pence jokes he'll 'bring a fly swatter' to first GOP debate after viral 2020 incident with mosquito

Former Vice President Mike Pence is making sure history doesn't repeat itself as he prepares for the first Republican presidential primary debate later this month. Pence, who famously had a fly land on his head during the 2020 vice presidential debate, jokingly stated that he would be armed with a fly swatter this time around. In an interview at the Iowa State Fair, Pence expressed his readiness to ward off any winged insects that may try to disrupt his performance in the upcoming debate.

Recalling the Flygate incident from the previous election cycle, Pence acknowledged that the incident overshadowed many of the exchanges between him and Kamala Harris. The fly's appearance on his head had sparked numerous parodies, including on "Saturday Night Live," and even prompted President Biden to campaign off of it by asking supporters to donate to his campaign.

Regarding his participation in the upcoming debate, Pence revealed that he has met the Republican National Committee's requirements, including signing a loyalty pledge to support the eventual GOP nominee. He expressed his hope that former President Donald Trump, with whom he ran in 2016, would also participate in the debate. Pence emphasized that his focus is on connecting with the American people and discussing the differences between himself and other candidates.

Meanwhile, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is viewed as a strong contender for the presidency in 2024, expressed confidence in his chances of winning and welcomed the idea of being attacked by his fellow Republican rivals during the debate. DeSantis stated that being targeted by opponents indicates that he is a threat and remains dedicated to his goal of winning the presidency. He also highlighted the support he receives from former President Trump, who considers him a formidable opponent.

DeSantis will be attending an event with Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, whom he mentioned as an example of a successful Republican governor. He criticized Trump for attacking Reynolds and voiced his commitment to supporting fellow Republicans within the party.

As the candidates gear up for the debate, it is evident that both Pence and DeSantis are eager to distinguish themselves and gain an advantage in the crowded primary field. While Pence focuses on his experience and dedication to the Republican cause, DeSantis highlights his ability to withstand attacks and his close ties to Trump. With the debate set to take place in Milwaukee on August 23, all eyes will be on these two contenders as they make their case to the American people.
