Trump's Surprise Visit to Iowa Fair Rattles DeSantis' Campaign

09:32 13.08.2023

Former President Donald J. Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis made their presence known at the Iowa State Fair on Saturday, as they competed for attention in the early nominating state. The fair, known for its traditional style of politics, drew most of the 2024 Republican presidential field.

Trump's late announcement on Tuesday that he would attend the event on the same day as DeSantis was seen as a strategic move to steal the spotlight from the struggling governor. DeSantis, who has experienced two staff shake-ups in the past three weeks and has seen a decline in the polls, had long planned to attend the Iowa State Fair as a way to jumpstart his campaign.

DeSantis is taking a high-risk gamble by focusing on winning Iowa, hoping that a victory in the Midwestern state will give him momentum going into the primaries in New Hampshire and South Carolina. However, Trump's overwhelming dominance in opinion polls and his 34-point lead over DeSantis in the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll of likely Republican voters poses a significant challenge for the governor.

Trump's appearance at the fair, just hours after DeSantis', threatens to overshadow the governor and dominate the headlines. The fair, held in Des Moines, attracts over a million visitors each year and serves as a crucial platform for aspiring presidential candidates.

While nine other candidates will also be attending the fair, they all trail significantly behind Trump in the polls. Most of Trump's rivals, including DeSantis, have agreed to be interviewed individually by Iowa's Republican Governor Kim Reynolds during the fair, but Trump declined her invitation. He has been unhappy with Reynolds' public neutrality in the primary race and her appearances with DeSantis at his Iowa events.

During his visit, Trump took the opportunity to prod Reynolds for her endorsement, claiming credit for her election in 2018. He criticized her for remaining neutral in the 2024 Republican presidential primary and skipped her invite for a "fire-side chat" at the fair.

Reynolds, who won re-election with a 19-point victory in 2022, has invited all the Republican 2024 presidential hopefuls to participate in these chats, but Trump was the only major candidate to decline the offer. Iowa's all-Republican congressional delegation is also staying neutral as the crowded field of candidates descends on the state.

Trump's dominant lead in the polls and his refusal to participate in events like the "fire-side chat" indicate his confidence in his position as the frontrunner. Meanwhile, DeSantis is hoping that his focus on Iowa will help him gain ground against Trump and revitalize his campaign.

The Iowa State Fair continues until August 20th, providing an important platform for candidates to connect with voters and make their case for the nomination. The competition between Trump and DeSantis at the fair highlights the intensity of the race for the Republican presidential nomination and sets the stage for further clashes among the candidates in the coming months.
