Arizona mother and partner sentenced for 'horrific' child abuse, including setting 10-year-old on fire

01:09 30.08.2023

In a shocking case of extreme child abuse, an Arizona mother and her romantic partner have been sentenced to 20 years in prison. The horrifying details of the abuse, which included physical attacks, withholding of food, and even setting the 10-year-old victim on fire, were revealed during the trial. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell announced the prison sentences for Chloe Rae Sergent, the child's mother, and Keola Wimbish, her partner, who were arrested on April 5, 2022, after a concerned family member reported the abuse to authorities.

Describing the abuse as "significant," Mitchell stated that it encompassed physical attacks, withholding of food, and the failure to seek medical care for the child's injuries. Shockingly, investigators also discovered evidence indicating that one of the defendants had set the child on fire. FOX 10 in Phoenix previously reported in April 2022 that Sergent had confessed to investigators about the alleged abuse, revealing horrifying details that included hitting the child with a machete and a crowbar. Additionally, a family member informed investigators that they had never witnessed Sergent and Wimbish feeding the child.

Medical professionals who examined the victim reported that the child was severely malnourished and had suffered from 12 broken bones, among other severe injuries. The child's cuts were infected and required surgical intervention to aid the healing process. The extent of the physical harm inflicted upon the young victim is truly distressing.

Both Sergent and Wimbish pleaded guilty in court to single counts of child abuse and attempt to commit child abuse. Wimbish also pleaded guilty to a second charge of attempting to commit child abuse. As a result, both defendants have been sentenced to 20 years in state prison, followed by 10 years of supervised probation.

It is worth noting that Sergent and Wimbish were in a romantic relationship at the time of the abuse. The couple lived together with the victim and two other children. The unimaginable abuse suffered by this child at the hands of those who were supposed to love and care for her is beyond comprehension.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell expressed gratitude towards the young victim for her bravery in telling her story. Mitchell also acknowledged the intervention of a caring relative, the thorough investigation conducted by the police, and the hard work carried out by prosecutors from the Maricopa County Attorney's Office. Through their joint efforts, justice has been served in this disturbing case.
