Kamala Harris prepared to take over presidency if needed

04:32 07.09.2023

Vice President Kamala Harris has been facing low approval ratings throughout her term, with only 32% of registered voters having a positive view of her. During an interview in Indonesia, Harris addressed questions about her readiness to assume the presidency should President Biden be unable to govern due to his age and health concerns. Biden, who is currently 80 years old and turning 81 in November, continues to be the oldest serving president in U.S. history. Harris described the possibility of stepping into the role of president as "hypothetical," but emphasized that every vice president understands the responsibility they may have to take over the job.

Despite concerns about Biden's age, Harris dismissed worries and defended his ability to understand and make important decisions. A recent poll showed that 77% of Americans and 69% of Democrats believe Biden is too old for a second term. Some Republican candidates, including Nikki Haley, have argued that a vote for Biden would essentially be a vote for Harris. In response, Harris emphasized her close working relationship with Biden, stating that she sees him every day and witnesses his ability to understand and navigate complex issues.

Harris, who ran for the presidency in 2020 but dropped out after the Democratic primary debates, also discussed her former work as a prosecutor. She argued that former President Trump should be held accountable for the January 6th protests at the U.S. Capitol and the effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Harris, who served as the San Francisco district attorney from 2004 to 2011 and California's attorney general from 2011 to 2017, emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable under the law.

With the 2024 presidential election cycle underway, Harris and Biden have expressed concerns about Donald Trump's potential threat to American democracy. Harris warned that democracies are fragile and emphasized the importance of fighting to protect them. Currently representing the United States at a summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Harris highlighted the significance of developing and strengthening relationships with other countries for both security and prosperity.

Harris' low approval ratings have been a consistent challenge throughout her vice presidency, with an NBC News poll revealing that she has the lowest rating for any vice president in the poll's history. Only 32% of registered voters have a positive view of Harris, compared to 49% with a negative view and 39% with a "very negative view." Despite these challenges, Harris remains committed to her role and continues to fulfill her duties as vice president.

Overall, Harris' interview addressed various topics including her readiness to assume the presidency, Biden's age, accountability for Trump, the 2024 election, and the importance of protecting democracy. While facing low approval ratings, Harris remains dedicated to her role and focused on representing the United States on the global stage.
