Arrested suspect in heinous subway beating claims divine intervention

12:40 07.09.2023

In a shocking incident that has left the city in disbelief, a disabled woman was savagely beaten by a hulking brute at a Manhattan subway station. Norton Blake, a 43-year-old resident of the Bronx, was caught on camera launching a violent assault on 60-year-old Laurell Reynolds. The disturbing video, which has since gone viral, shows Blake using a cane, belt, and his fists to attack the defenseless woman.

The assault took place on September 1st at approximately 3:30 a.m. inside the West 116 Street and Lenox Avenue subway station. In the video, Blake can be heard yelling at Reynolds, claiming that he was trying to help her with her walker. "I was helping you with your f-king walker on the stairs, it just happened to fall down!" he screamed. Reynolds, who was cowering beneath him, pleaded for him to stop and called for help.

An MTA worker witnessed the horrifying incident and immediately called the city's Rail Control Center, who in turn contacted 911. The worker documented the attack, providing crucial information about what was happening and the injuries sustained by Reynolds. Despite this, responding officers initially released Blake after speaking to both parties and receiving conflicting accounts of the incident. It is currently under investigation whether the police saw the video before or after allowing Blake to walk away.

Reynolds, who remains hospitalized since the assault, spoke to reporters about the traumatic experience. "I don't deserve that. Not at all, not at all... and I pray to God that it doesn't happen to no one else," she said. Reynolds' daughter, Lashanna Reese, expressed her relief that Blake had been arrested but expressed concerns about his potential release. "So now I fear for my safety and my mother's safety because he has family too," she said.

Blake, who has had nine prior arrests and a history of violence, was finally apprehended by the NYPD's Warrant Squad on Wednesday morning. He has been charged with assault and was awaiting arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court. The incident has raised questions about the initial response of the police and has led to an internal investigation by the NYPD's Internal Affairs Bureau.

The shocking video footage, which captures the brutal attack in great detail, has ignited outrage across the city. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of individuals in public spaces and the importance of swift and decisive action to ensure their safety. As Laurell Reynolds continues to recover from her injuries, the community awaits justice for this heinous crime.
