New Mexico governor suspends right to carry firearms in public in Albuquerque

15:23 10.09.2023

In a bold move to address the escalating gun violence in Albuquerque and its surrounding areas, Democratic governor Michelle Lujan Grisham issued an emergency order on Friday, suspending the right to carry firearms in public for a minimum of 30 days. This order comes in the wake of multiple tragic incidents, including the fatal shootings of three children.

Last week, an 11-year-old boy was ruthlessly gunned down while on his way home from a minor league baseball game, sending shockwaves through the community. This heart-wrenching incident was followed by the tragic deaths of a four-year-old girl, who was shot in her bed inside a motorhome, and a 13-year-old girl in Taos county in August. These devastating events prompted Governor Lujan Grisham to take immediate action.

However, not everyone is in agreement with the governor's decision. A pro-gun group has filed a lawsuit against Governor Lujan Grisham, aiming to block the emergency order restricting open and concealed carry in Albuquerque's Bernalillo county. While the group's intentions are to safeguard the rights of gun owners, the governor remains steadfast in her commitment to protecting the public from further harm.

Governor Lujan Grisham acknowledges that legal challenges are expected, but she firmly believes that her responsibility to safeguard the lives of New Mexico residents outweighs any potential opposition. With gun violence continuing to claim innocent lives, the governor felt compelled to take decisive action to prevent further tragedies.

The emergency order restricts the carrying of firearms in public, both openly and concealed, across Albuquerque and Bernalillo county. This measure, however, is not intended to be permanent. The order will be in effect for a minimum of 30 days, during which time the situation will be closely monitored to determine if additional measures are necessary to combat the surge in gun violence.

Governor Lujan Grisham's response sends a powerful message that the safety and well-being of New Mexico's citizens are of paramount importance. While this decision may face legal challenges, the governor remains resolute in her commitment to protecting her constituents and curbing the devastating impact of gun violence.

As the 30-day emergency order takes effect, the people of Albuquerque and Bernalillo county can only hope that this bold action will help bring an end to the tragic loss of innocent lives and foster a safer future for their communities.
