Retired police chief on bike deliberately hit by teen driver, video shows

02:16 19.09.2023

In a shocking incident that has sparked outrage across the nation, a retired California police chief was deliberately struck and killed by a laughing teenager while riding his bike in Las Vegas. Andreas Probst, 64, was enjoying his morning bike ride on August 14 when the 17-year-old driver of a stolen Hyundai Elantra plowed into him in a fatal hit-and-run.

The incident, captured on a now-viral video, shows the callousness and disregard for human life exhibited by the teenage driver and his passenger. In the video, the driver can be heard asking, "Ready?" as the passenger, giggling, records the collision on his iPhone. With a malicious intent, the driver veers into the bike lane behind Probst, who is wearing a red shirt and shorts, and rams into his back wheel, sending him flying over the hood of the car.

Following the collision, the passenger turns and points his iPhone out the window, capturing the aftermath of the incident. "Damn, that n- got knocked out!" the passenger callously remarks in the 31-second clip. The panicked driver immediately expresses the need to flee the scene, saying, "Oh, sh-, we need to get out of here," as he speeds away.

Probst, who was still alive after the collision, was rushed to the hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries. His wife, Crystal Probst, expressed her grief and frustration in her first public statement since the incident. She called for the nation to show up and demonstrate outrage in the courtrooms, emphasizing that her husband's murder is a reflection of the anarchy and lack of accountability prevailing in many U.S. cities.

The driver, whose name has been withheld due to his age, was apprehended by the police and subsequently booked into Clark County Juvenile Hall on charges related to the hit-and-run. However, two weeks later, police discovered a disturbing video of the incident, which had garnered 5.1 million views on a social media platform. The footage led to the upgrading of charges against the teenager to murder.

The passenger who recorded the sickening act is still at large, and authorities are actively searching for him. The former Bell Police Department head, Andreas Probst, had retired in 2009 after a 35-year career in law enforcement. He had moved to Las Vegas to work in global security, according to local reports.

Probst's daughter, Taylor Probst, received an alert from her father's Apple Watch on the morning of the crash, indicating that he had fallen down. She and her mother immediately drove to the scene, where they discovered Probst's scattered belongings but learned he had already been taken to the hospital. Four hours later, they received the devastating news of his passing. Probst leaves behind his wife and two children, with whom he would have celebrated his 35th wedding anniversary this month.

The senseless killing of Andreas Probst has once again highlighted the pressing issues of crime, violence, and lack of accountability in many U.S. cities. The video evidence of the intentional act has triggered widespread outrage and demands for justice. As the nation mourns the loss of a respected former police chief, it is hoped that the legal system will ensure that those responsible for this heinous crime are held accountable for their actions.
