16:09 24.09.2023

In a major development, one of the three suspects involved in the bank robbery that occurred in Nogales, Arizona, has been apprehended with the help of Mexican authorities. The robbery took place on September 13th, shortly after 3 p.m., at a First Convenience Bank located inside a Walmart, as reported by the Nogales Police Department.

The suspect responsible for the heist was quickly identified as Francisco Javier Romo-Angulo, who managed to escape with an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing in a vehicle. Law enforcement agencies, including the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office and the Arizona Department of Public Safety, coordinated their efforts and located the vehicle on Interstate 19. However, to their surprise, Romo-Angulo was not present in the car, and instead, they arrested the driver, Stephen Patrick Bacon, a 64-year-old resident of Sonoita.

Bacon was subsequently booked into jail on multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit armed robbery, failure to yield or stop to law enforcement, and facilitation to commit armed robbery, according to the Nogales International newspaper. Meanwhile, Romo-Angulo, a 31-year-old resident of Nogales, managed to evade capture until September 16th, when the police announced on Facebook that he was finally taken into custody.

According to federal court records obtained by the news website Border Report, Romo-Angulo allegedly entered the bank and placed an empty suitcase on the counter while demanding $45,000 from the teller. He reportedly threatened to shoot her if she failed to comply. Surveillance cameras at the Grand Avenue International Port of Entry captured footage of Romo-Angulo walking into Mexico just ten minutes after the robbery.

The U.S. authorities sought assistance from Mexican law enforcement to locate and apprehend Romo-Angulo. He was eventually detained in Nogales, Mexico, and subsequently handed over to U.S. authorities at the Mariposa Port of Entry in Nogales, Arizona. Additionally, further video evidence revealed that Bacon and another man, identified as Mark Smith, had crossed into Nogales from Mexico around 20 minutes prior to the robbery, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Arizona.

Mark Smith was also located and taken into custody at the same time as Bacon. As a result, all three suspects involved in the bank robbery are now facing charges of bank robbery. This collaborative effort between U.S. and Mexican authorities serves as an example of effective cross-border cooperation in tackling criminal activities and bringing perpetrators to justice.
