Massive Fentanyl Haul on NYC Subway Exposes Alarming Drug Crisis

23:19 28.09.2023

In a shocking turn of events, authorities have seized over 40 pounds of fentanyl, valued at $1.5 million, from a drug mill located just six blocks away from the Bronx day care where a 1-year-old boy tragically lost his life after being poisoned by the lethal opioid. The drug operation was discovered at an apartment on Heath Avenue in Kingsbridge, after law enforcement apprehended one of the alleged traffickers, who was found carrying dozens of bricks of fentanyl in a suitcase on the subway.

Juan Gabriel Herrera Vargas, 42, the accused drug-runner, was spotted by NYPD officers and federal agents as he made his way to the Kingsbridge Road subway station, carrying a small black bag. He later emerged from the station, heading back to the Heath Avenue apartment building, now pulling a black and tan rolling suitcase. However, upon noticing the investigators approaching him, Vargas quickly fled and left the suitcase behind, containing a staggering 13 kilos of fentanyl. He managed to evade capture by jumping over a fence and reentering the building through a back entrance.

Authorities later spotted Vargas leaving the apartment building once again, around 8:40 p.m., this time pulling a blue rolling suitcase with a red stripe in the middle. They wasted no time in arresting him and made a shocking discovery inside the suitcase - approximately 50,000 glassines, which are commonly used to package drugs. These glassines were wrapped together into 25 larger packages, indicating the extensive scale of the operation.

Further investigations led law enforcement to search the apartment, where they found one kilogram of suspected fentanyl, six pounds of loose powder, 10,000 filled glassines, and various other materials used for packaging drugs, such as grinders, scales, stamps, and rubber bands. The estimated street value of the seized fentanyl amounts to $1.5 million. Inside the back bedroom of the apartment, investigators uncovered a glass table specifically set up for packaging narcotics, equipped with bright lights. Another bedroom was filled with additional drug paraphernalia, along with a large TV monitor connected to a security camera to monitor the apartment. The windows of the apartment were covered with large plastic trash bags, obscuring the view from the outside.

Juan Gabriel Herrera Vargas has been charged with operating as a major trafficker, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the first and third degrees, and criminally using drug paraphernalia in the second degree. His arrest comes in the wake of the fentanyl-related death of 1-year-old Nicholas Feliz Dominici at the Divino Ni?±o Daycare in Kingsbridge. Four individuals, including the day care owner, Grei Mendez, and her husband Felix Herrera, who lived next door, have been hit with federal charges in connection to the fentanyl-peddling operation that led to the tragic death of the toddler and the hospitalization of three other children.

The discovery of this drug mill, operating merely six blocks away from the daycare where an innocent life was lost, has sent shockwaves through the city. "The conduct charged is shockingly brazen, especially in a city still grieving the overdose death of a young child who lost his life at a nearby daycare center," stated NYC Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget G. Brennan. US Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent in Charge Frank Tarentino echoed this sentiment, stating, "The public outcry after the poisoning death of a toddler was not enough to stop a drug mill from operating just six blocks away from that daycare." These incidents have ignited calls for increased efforts to eradicate drug trafficking and protect vulnerable communities from the devastating consequences of fentanyl exposure. Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark emphasized the urgency of this matter, stating, "Once again, a large supply of fentanyl has been found in the Bronx. For years, our community has been a hub for fentanyl distribution and has suffered so many deaths. The catastrophic loss of one-year-old Nicholas Dominici is the bleakest reminder that we must be relentless in removing drug traffickers from our city.".
