Louisiana Tech linebacker suspended for stomping on opponent's head

02:55 01.10.2023

Louisiana Tech linebacker Brevin Randle has been suspended indefinitely after a disturbing incident during the Bulldogs' game against the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) on Friday night. Randle, a redshirt senior, was seen stomping on UTEP offensive lineman Steven Hubbard's head while he was already down on the turf. The incident was captured on video and quickly went viral, prompting outrage from fans and players alike.

In a statement released on Saturday night, Louisiana Tech athletic director Eric Wood announced the suspension, citing Randle's disregard for his opponent's safety and his conduct falling below the program's standards. Wood emphasized that the university, athletic department, and football program believe in culture, class, and competitive excellence, which were clearly not displayed in that moment.

Randle reportedly met with Coach Sonny Cumbie and Wood, where he acknowledged that his actions were wrong and understood the consequences. However, it remains unclear whether further discipline will be imposed on him. Randle, who transferred from Stephen F. Austin, has been a key player for Louisiana Tech this season, recording 46 tackles and two sacks in his first six games with the Bulldogs.

The incident did not go unnoticed by the CBS broadcasting crew, who labeled it as a "dirty play." However, officials on the field did not flag Randle for his unsportsmanlike conduct, and it was only later in the game that the officiating crew admitted their mistake to UTEP head coach Dana Dimel during halftime. Dimel praised the referee for owning up to the error, describing him as a class act.

While Randle's actions drew widespread criticism, Louisiana Tech ultimately came out victorious, defeating UTEP 24-10. The Bulldogs' win was highlighted by a 67-yard punt return for a touchdown by Smoke Harris and a 1-yard rushing touchdown by Tyre Shelton, set up by an 85-yard catch and run by Cyrus Allen. Quarterback Jack Turner contributed with a touchdown pass, and Shelton finished the game with 104 rushing yards on 16 carries.

The incident has sparked discussions about player safety and sportsmanship, with NFL players like Aaron Jones and Dez Bryant condemning Randle's behavior on social media. The Associated Press contributed to this report, shedding light on the repercussions of Randle's actions and the overall impact on the game.
