Whale Collision Claims Australian Man's Life in 'Absolute Freak Accident'

03:42 01.10.2023

In a devastating incident off the coast of Botany Bay in Sydney, Australia, an Australian man lost his life during a boating trip when a breaching whale collided with their vessel. Stuart Collings, 61, and his brother-in-law Darren Curmi, 53, were enjoying a leisurely runabout boat ride on Saturday morning when tragedy struck. As the whale breached onto the boat, both men were thrown overboard. Collings was knocked unconscious while Curmi managed to keep him afloat for a harrowing 45 minutes until emergency crews arrived.

Authorities have described this incident as an "absolute freak accident," leaving the community shocked and saddened. Jihad Dib, the state Emergency Services Minister, expressed his disbelief at the tragedy. According to 9News Australia, Dib stated, "The runabout vessel was likely to have struck or been impacted by a whale breaching, causing the boat to tilt, ejecting both men."

The alarming scene unfolded when police received reports of an unmanned boat circling in the waters off Cape Banks at La Perouse. Water Police quickly responded and discovered two men struggling in the water. Video footage captured the runaway boat skipping through the choppy waters, heightening the urgency of the rescue operation.

Paramedics sprang into action, performing CPR on Collings, but, tragically, their efforts were in vain as he was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses on nearby boats rushed to aid Curmi, pulling him out of the water before he was transported to a hospital in stable condition for further monitoring.

Acting Police Superintendent Siobhan Munro expressed that encounters between boats and breaching whales are not unheard of, considering the abundance of whales in the area. Munro stated, "There are lots of whales out there. It is not unheard of the stories of whales breaching next to boats, which is obviously captured quite often. So this is a tragic accident but not one that I guess would be... unexpected."

The incident has prompted an investigation by detectives, who are awaiting a report from the coroner's office to shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the collision. This heartbreaking event echoes a similar incident that occurred in New Zealand last year when a whale collided with an ocean bird-watching boat, claiming the lives of five women.

As authorities work to determine the cause of the collision, the boat, which measures nearly 15 feet, has been recovered and will undergo forensic testing to gather crucial evidence. New South Wales Water Police Acting Superintendent Siobhan Munro expressed her disbelief at the incident, stating that encounters like these are rare in her experience.

Jihad Dib, the New South Wales minister for emergency services, emphasized the dangers that can lurk on waterways, remarking that this tragic accident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable risks involved in maritime activities.

The loss of Stuart Collings has left a void in the hearts of his loved ones, and the community mourns the loss of a life so tragically cut short in this devastating encounter with nature.
