NASA Reveals Unprecedented Images of 'Ravioli' Moon Circling Saturn

06:54 01.10.2023

In an exciting development, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released never-before-seen photographs of Pan, one of Saturn's 145 recognized moons. These stunning images were captured by the Cassini spacecraft, showcasing Pan in unprecedented detail. To engage public participation, NASA took to their Instagram account, inviting users to compare the moon to various food dishes, including ravioli, pierogi, and empanadas.

The photographs reveal Pan's unique shape, reminiscent of a dumpling, which is defined by a ridge around its equator. This ridge, similar to the characteristics of another Saturn moon called Atlas, gives Pan its distinct appearance. Notably, Pan orbits Saturn from within a gap in one of the planet's rings, completing its orbit every 13.8 hours at an altitude of 83,000 miles.

The Cassini spacecraft had an extraordinary encounter with Pan, coming within 15,300 miles of the moon. This proximity allowed scientists to capture detailed images, offering a closer look at Pan's features. The spacecraft's perspective changed as it passed by, providing a comprehensive perspective on the moon.

Pan's discovery can be attributed to M.R. Showalter, who initially identified the moon using images taken by the Voyager 2 spacecraft nine years prior. However, recent discoveries by a team led by Edward Ashton have significantly increased the number of recognized moons orbiting Saturn. In May of this year, the team identified 62 new moons, resulting in the recognition of a total of 145 moons. This influx of new moons compelled scientists to move beyond Greco-Roman mythology to name them, incorporating names from Gallic, Inuit, and Norse mythologies.

NASA explains that Pan derives its name from Greek mythology, as it is named after the god of nature and the forest, a satyr resembling a man with the hind legs and hooves of a goat. This celestial body's captivating characteristics make it a subject of fascination for astronomers and space enthusiasts alike.

The release of these never-before-seen photographs has sparked widespread interest and awe among the public. The images offer a glimpse into the mysterious and captivating world of Saturn's moons, reminding us of the endless wonders of our universe.
