Onewheel electric skateboards recalled after multiple fatalities

11:52 01.10.2023

In a shocking development, Future Motion, the manufacturer of Onewheel electric skateboards, has issued a voluntary recall for all of its boards due to serious crash hazards. The decision comes after the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced that four people have tragically lost their lives while using the skateboards since 2019. The CPSC also revealed that the boards have caused numerous injuries, including traumatic brain injury, concussion, paralysis, fractures, and ligament damage.

According to the CPSC, the self-balancing skateboards can lose their ability to balance the rider if they exceed the board's limits, leading to a potential crash that can result in severe injury or even death. It is important to note that in at least three of the fatal incidents, the riders were not wearing helmets, highlighting the critical importance of protective gear.

The affected models included in the recall are the Onewheel GT, Onewheel Pint X, Onewheel Pint, and Onewheel+ XR electric skateboards. Those who own these models are advised to immediately stop using them. Future Motion has taken steps to address the issue by creating a safety alert feature called "haptic buzz," which will be available to owners through a firmware update. This new functionality will provide riders with a vibration warning system, alerting them when they could be at risk of a crash. By receiving this warning, riders can take appropriate action, such as leaning back and slowing down to prevent accidents.

Owners of the affected models are encouraged to download or update the Onewheel app to access the Haptic Buzz alert functionality. It is important to note that the update will be available in the coming weeks for eligible boards. However, the original Onewheel model and Onewheel+ are not eligible for the Haptic Buzz update and should not be used any further. To compensate for this inconvenience, Onewheel is offering owners of these boards a $100 credit toward the purchase of a new one.

The recall affects approximately 300,000 Onewheel electric skateboards, which were sold online and at independent stores between January 2014 and September 2023. The boards were priced between $1,050 and $2,200. Future Motion has assured that it is directly contacting known purchasers of the products to ensure they are aware of the recall and can take the necessary steps to ensure their safety.

In response to the recall, a statement from Onewheel emphasized the company's commitment to rider safety. They stated, "Rider safety is our top priority and is critical to the long-term success of the sport." Onewheel strongly encourages all riders to wear helmets and other protective gear at all times while riding.

Consumers who own any of the affected Onewheel electric skateboards are advised to take the recall seriously and immediately stop using the boards. It is crucial to prioritize safety and follow the instructions provided by Future Motion and the CPSC. Riders should stay informed about the firmware update and install it as soon as it becomes available. Additionally, customers can visit the Onewheel website for more information on how to proceed and to learn about their options for refunds in the form of store credit.
