Damar Hamlin triumphs over adversity, returns to NFL after cardiac arrest

15:51 01.10.2023

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin made a triumphant return to the field on Sunday, playing in his first regular-season NFL game since suffering a cardiac arrest last season. The Bills listed Hamlin as active for their game against the Miami Dolphins and even posted a video on social media of him running onto the field alongside his teammates. This game marked a significant milestone for Hamlin, as it was his first time playing since the terrifying incident on January 2, 2023, when he took a devastating blow to the chest during a Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Earlier this summer, Hamlin made an appearance in the Bills' preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts, recording three solo tackles and helping his team secure a 23-19 victory. His return to competitive play has been a long and challenging journey, with headlines being made when he collapsed on the field. Officials later revealed that Hamlin experienced a cardiac arrest but had his heartbeat restored before being taken away in an ambulance. He was in critical condition and had to use a ventilator, but he began showing remarkable improvement and was able to speak to his teammates.

After being discharged from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, Hamlin was transferred to Buffalo General Hospital in New York, where he continued his recovery. He was eventually sent home on January 11, nine days after being initially hospitalized. Despite not being able to play, Hamlin continued to support his team throughout the remainder of the season. Just 14 days after being released from the hospital, he visited his teammates at practice and expressed his excitement for their playoff game against the Miami Dolphins on social media. Additionally, he was present in the stands as the Bills faced the Bengals once again.

In April, the Bills announced that Hamlin was cleared to play, marking a significant milestone in his recovery. However, he was a healthy scratch for the team's first three games of the season. It was not until safety Jordan Poyer's injury that Hamlin was given the opportunity to make the active roster, although he was expected to primarily contribute on special teams.

Prior to taking the field on Sunday, Hamlin shared a special moment with his teammates, joining them in the pregame huddle before they ran out of the tunnel. He was the last player to exit the tunnel before kickoff, running the length of the field with his arms spread wide. Once in the end zone, he took off his helmet and stood before the cheering crowd, symbolizing his triumphant return.

Hamlin's previous return to the field during the preseason game against the Colts was met with an overwhelming sense of relief and joy. He expressed how good it felt to be back and how it alleviated some of the weight on his shoulders. As a former sixth-round pick out of Pittsburgh, Hamlin had emerged as a starter last year, recording 91 tackles and one forced fumble.

Overall, Damar Hamlin's return to the field after his cardiac arrest is a testament to his resilience and determination. His recovery has garnered attention and admiration from fans and players alike, making him a hero within the league. Although he may only be expected to contribute on special teams for now, his presence on the field is a reminder of the strength and courage it takes to overcome such a life-threatening event.
