Celtics Make Another Blockbuster Move, Acquire Jrue Holiday after Damian Lillard Trade

16:40 01.10.2023

In a stunning turn of events, Jrue Holiday's desire to retire with the Milwaukee Bucks has been shattered as he finds himself traded to one of their top competitors in the Eastern Conference. Multiple reports confirm that the Portland Trail Blazers have agreed to send Holiday to the Boston Celtics, just four days after acquiring him from the Bucks in a three-team blockbuster trade involving the Phoenix Suns.

According to ESPN, the Celtics are relinquishing Robert Williams, Malcolm Brogdon, a 2024 first-round pick, and a 2029 unprotected first-round pick in exchange for Holiday. This trade comes as a surprise, considering the Blazers had only recently acquired Holiday along with an unprotected first-round pick and two unprotected pick swaps from the Bucks.

This whirlwind of trades began when the Suns acquired Jusuf Nurkic, Nasir Little, and Keon Johnson from the Blazers, as well as Grayson Allen from the Bucks. In return, the Bucks received superstar Damian Lillard, solidifying their championship ambitions alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Holiday's inclusion in the Lillard trade signified a new chapter in his career, leaving behind the Bucks who he played a pivotal role for during their championship-winning season in 2020-21. Throughout his three-year tenure in Milwaukee, Holiday showcased his skills, earning his second All-Star nod last year while averaging 18.5 points, 6.8 assists, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. Additionally, he has been named to the All-Defensive first or second team five out of the last six years.

Interestingly, Holiday had expressed his desire to remain with the Bucks in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel just one day before the Lillard deal. He stated, "Before I even won here I think I said I'm a Buck for life and I mean that like deep in my heart. I don't want to play for any other team." However, fate had other plans for the talented point guard.

With the addition of Holiday, the Celtics bolster their perimeter defense, following the departure of Marcus Smart in a previous trade with the Memphis Grizzlies. Holiday's defensive prowess will undoubtedly complement the star duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, solidifying the Celtics' chances of contending for the championship.

Meanwhile, the Blazers find themselves in a rebuild mode after parting ways with Lillard and acquiring a plethora of assets. Alongside Brogdon and Williams, they also have promising rookies Deandre Ayton, Toumani Camara, and the highly anticipated No. 2 overall pick, Scoot Henderson. With these pieces in place, the Blazers hope to exceed expectations and build a formidable team for the future.

As the Bucks and Celtics finished first and second in the Eastern Conference, respectively, last season, these trades will undoubtedly shake up the power dynamics in the conference. Both teams now boast strong rosters and will be aiming to reclaim their positions at the top.

The stage is set for an exhilarating season, filled with intense competition and unexpected twists. Fans will eagerly await the performance of Jrue Holiday in a Celtics jersey as he attempts to spoil the championship ambitions of his former team, the Milwaukee Bucks.
