Super Bowl champ Russ Francis tragically killed in Lake Placid plane crash

01:29 04.10.2023

Former NFL tight end Russ Francis, a three-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion, was one of two people who tragically died in a plane crash over the weekend in New York. The crash occurred shortly after takeoff from Lake Placid Airport, when the plane's engine lost power. The investigation, led by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), revealed that the plane attempted to turn around and land safely but ultimately hit a berm at the end of the runway and fell into a ravine.

Francis, 70, was joined by fellow aviation enthusiast Richard McSpadden, 63, on the ill-fated flight. According to the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, the two were in a single-engine Cessna 177 when the tragedy occurred. McSpadden, a senior vice president of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and a renowned aviation safety expert, had an impressive career that included serving as the commander of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds.

Russ Francis, known for his illustrious football career, was a beloved figure in the sports community. He was a first-round pick for the New England Patriots in the 1975 NFL Draft and played for the team until 1980. During his time with the Patriots, Francis was named to the Pro Bowl three consecutive seasons from 1977 to 1979 and was an integral part of the team's success. Patriots team owner Robert Kraft expressed his condolences, describing Francis as a "fan favorite" who pushed the limits both on and off the field.

After leaving the Patriots, Francis joined the San Francisco 49ers in 1982 and played a crucial role in the team's Super Bowl victory in 1984. He returned to New England in 1987 for one final season before retiring the following year. Throughout his career, Francis amassed impressive statistics, with 393 receptions for 5,262 yards and 40 touchdowns.

Apart from his football career, Francis was also a passionate pilot, with nearly 50 years of experience. He was the president of Lake Placid Airways, a charter and scenic flight company based in upstate New York. The airline's website revealed that Francis had previously operated a charter service in Hawaii.

The NTSB is currently conducting an investigation into the crash, with a preliminary report expected to be released on Friday. The report will provide further details on the incident, including analysis and a probable cause for the tragic accident.

The news of Russ Francis' untimely death has left the New England Patriots and the wider football community in shock. As the investigation continues, his legacy as both a talented athlete and a passionate pilot will undoubtedly be remembered fondly by fans, teammates, and loved ones alike.
