Biden unveils $9 billion debt relief plan for 125,000 Americans

In a move to alleviate the burden of student debt, the Biden administration has announced the forgiveness of $9 billion in student loans for 125,000 borrowers. This decision comes as student loan repayments are set to resume after a hiatus of over three years. The debt cancellation initiative is the latest effort from the White House to mitigate the impact of student loans, following the Supreme Court's ruling in June that invalidated the administration's plan for broad-based student loan forgiveness.

Under the now-defunct plan, more than 40 million borrowers would have had the opportunity to erase up to $20,000 each in debt. However, with the court striking down this approach, the Biden administration has turned its attention to alternative methods of relieving student debt. This includes the creation of a new income-driven debt repayment (IDR) plan, as well as targeted forgiveness for certain qualified borrowers.

One group of borrowers set to benefit from this debt relief are public servants. Approximately 53,000 borrowers enrolled in Public Service Loan Forgiveness programs will receive $5.2 billion in forgiveness. These programs are open to individuals working for the government or nonprofit organizations and offer forgiveness after 120 qualifying monthly payments while working full-time for an eligible employer. Public servants such as teachers, law enforcement professionals, and social workers will greatly benefit from this debt relief.

Another group of borrowers who will receive relief are those enrolled in IDRs. Around 51,000 borrowers with $2.8 billion in debt will see their monthly payments reduced through these income-based plans. However, the Biden administration has acknowledged that some of these programs failed to accurately track payments made under the plans. As a result, the Education Department is reviewing these plans and discharging debt for borrowers who have been in repayment for over 20 years but never received the relief they were entitled to.

Additionally, the Education Department has identified approximately 22,000 borrowers with a total or permanent disability, who will have their $1.2 billion debt discharged. This identification process is being conducted through a data match with the Social Security Administration.

While the Biden administration is working on a plan for broader student loan relief through the Higher Education Act, this process is expected to take at least a year and may face legal challenges. In the meantime, the Education Department has prioritized providing debt relief to specific groups of borrowers. U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona has highlighted that the administration has already approved a total of $127 billion in debt relief for approximately 3.6 million borrowers, with the latest round of forgiveness included.

President Joe Biden is set to announce the additional $9 billion in student debt relief for 125,000 borrowers during a press conference at the White House. This announcement brings the total approved debt cancellation by the Biden administration to $127 billion for nearly 3.6 million Americans. The measures outlined in the announcement include $5.2 billion in debt relief for 53,000 borrowers under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, almost $2.8 billion in new debt relief for 51,000 borrowers through fixes to the income-driven repayment plans, and $1.2 billion for almost 22,000 borrowers with disabilities who have been identified and approved for discharge through a data match with the Social Security Administration.

President Biden's commitment to addressing the student loan crisis remains steadfast, and he continues to pursue new measures to provide relief to Americans burdened by student debt. The administration's efforts aim to address the flaws within the current student loan system and provide much-needed financial relief to millions of borrowers.
