5 injured in shooting at Baltimore university's homecoming festivities

12:37 04.10.2023

In a shocking incident that marred the celebratory atmosphere of Morgan State University's homecoming week, a shooting occurred on Tuesday night, leaving five individuals wounded. The victims, four men, and one woman, aged between 18 and 22, were treated at the scene and transported to the hospital, with their injuries reported as non-life-threatening.

The shooting took place shortly after the coronation of Mister and Miss Morgan State at the Murphy Fine Arts Center, as students were making their way to a campus ball. The exact location of the shooting remains undisclosed, but the Baltimore Police Department confirmed that gunshots were heard and multiple dorm windows were shattered. Authorities responded swiftly, treating the incident as an active shooter situation and implementing a shelter-in-place order that lasted for several hours.

The Baltimore Police Department, along with SWAT officers, conducted a thorough search of a building where the suspected shooter was believed to be hiding. However, the search did not yield any results, and the shelter-in-place order was lifted around 12:30 a.m. No arrests have been made so far, and the police have not released any information regarding potential suspects.

Morgan State University President David Wilson expressed his deep regret over the tragic incident and canceled classes for Wednesday. An emergency meeting is scheduled to determine whether other homecoming events planned for the week will proceed as scheduled.

The shooting at Morgan State University has once again highlighted the urgent need for gun reform in the United States. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott emphasized the importance of addressing this issue nationally, stating, "We have to get serious about guns."

Morgan State University, founded in 1867, is a historically Black college with approximately 9,000 students. The university has a rich history and was initially established as the Centenary Biblical Institute. The state of Maryland acquired the institution in 1939 to provide greater opportunities for Black citizens.

As investigations into the shooting continue, ATF Baltimore Special Agents and K9s are assisting the Baltimore and MSU police in searching for shell casings and additional evidence at the crime scene. Concerned family members have been directed to a nearby Safeway parking lot for updates from Baltimore police officers.

The incident has left the Morgan State University community in shock and disbelief. Students, alumni, and their families had gathered to celebrate homecoming, an event that holds great significance for the university. However, President David Wilson reassured the community, stating, "By no means will it define who we are as a university."

The shooting at Morgan State University serves as a tragic reminder of the ongoing issue of gun violence in the United States. It is a call for action for lawmakers to address the pressing need for gun reform to ensure the safety and security of educational institutions and communities nationwide.
