Julia Ormond files lawsuit against Harvey Weinstein for sexual misconduct

04:43 05.10.2023

British actress Julia Ormond has filed a lawsuit against Harvey Weinstein, accusing him of sexually assaulting her in 1995. The lawsuit also targets The Walt Disney Co., Miramax, and her former talent agency CAA, alleging negligence and enabling Weinstein's abusive behavior. The case was filed in New York under the Adult Survivors Act, which allows victims of sexual assault to file lawsuits outside the statute of limitations.

Ormond, known for her roles in films such as "Legends of the Fall" and "Sabrina," claims that Weinstein hindered her career at a time when she was rising to stardom. According to the lawsuit, Ormond met Weinstein in 1994 and remained in contact with him to discuss scripts and projects. She eventually entered into a production agreement with Miramax, where Weinstein was co-chairman.

The actress alleges that Weinstein sexually assaulted her in December 1995 after a business meeting. She claims that he lured her into a private room, asked for a massage, and then climbed on top of her, masturbated, and forced her to perform oral sex. Weeks later, Ormond confronted Weinstein about the assault, which led to retaliation and negative impacts on her career.

Ormond reported the incident to her agents at CAA, Bryan Lourd and Kevin Huvane, but alleges that they advised against speaking out and failed to provide her with protection. She is suing the talent agency for negligence and breach of fiduciary duty. Ormond also accuses The Walt Disney Co. and Miramax, which was purchased by Disney in the 1990s, of negligent supervision and retention.

In a statement, Ormond's attorneys expressed her feelings of betrayal by CAA and her hopes of holding accountable the people and institutions that enabled Weinstein's predatory behavior. Ormond herself stated that she is "humbled and grateful" to the women who have spoken out before her and that she seeks closure by holding those responsible accountable.

Ormond emphasized the need for systemic change and accountability from enablers in order to prevent further instances of abuse. She believes that Weinstein could not have carried out his actions without the support of others. Speaking about her decision to come forward publicly after decades, Ormond explained that part of her closure involves shedding light on the role of enablers and ensuring increased protections for workers.

The lawsuit filed by Julia Ormond adds to the growing number of legal actions against Harvey Weinstein and those who enabled his abusive behavior. As the #MeToo movement continues to push for accountability and change, more survivors are finding the courage to seek justice and hold powerful individuals and institutions responsible for their actions.
