Armed Man Arrested at Wisconsin Capitol, Returns with Assault Rifle

15:18 05.10.2023

A man in Wisconsin was arrested twice in one day after illegally bringing a handgun into the state Capitol and later returning with an assault rifle, demanding to see Democratic Governor Tony Evers. The incident occurred on Wednesday when the unidentified suspect, who was shirtless, entered the Capitol building in Madison around 2 p.m. carrying a holstered handgun. He approached the governor's office on the first floor, even though Evers was not present at the time.

Carrying a firearm openly in the Capitol is against the law, and the man was swiftly arrested and taken into custody by the Wisconsin State Capitol Police. State Department of Administration spokesperson Tatyana Warrick stated that the man's weapon was neither concealed nor did he possess a concealed carry permit. He was subsequently booked into the Dane County Jail but later posted bail.

However, the man wasn't finished with his disruptive behavior. He returned to the Capitol shortly before 9 p.m. the same day, this time armed with an assault-style rifle. Warrick clarified that the building is closed to the public at 6 p.m., making his presence even more alarming. Capitol police officers promptly arrested him again.

The Madison Police Department reported on Thursday that the suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed, was taken into protective custody and transferred to a hospital. However, further details regarding his condition were not provided. The Wisconsin State Capitol does not have metal detectors, and it is open to the public daily from 8 a.m. A Capitol police officer is typically stationed outside the governor's office, which includes a conference room and offices for the attorney general.

Warrick stated that there are no immediate plans to change security measures in the Capitol or for the governor. Fox News Digital reached out to both the Madison police and the governor's office for comment, but no response was received. The governor's office typically refrains from addressing questions related to security matters.

The motive behind the suspect's determination to see Governor Evers remains unknown. However, it is worth noting that Evers was previously included on a hit list possessed by a gunman suspected of shooting a retired county judge in his Wisconsin home in 2022. Other individuals on the list included Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, who was the target of a kidnapping plot in 2020.

This incident is the latest in a series of violent threats against public officials, highlighting the need for enhanced security measures. As of now, there are no metal detectors in place at the Wisconsin State Capitol. Governor Evers has not commented on the incident, and his spokesperson, Britt Cudaback, declined to provide any additional information. Evers, a Democrat who served as the state school superintendent, was re-elected to a second term last year.
