Former USC gynecologist accused of sex crimes found dead at home

Disgraced University of Southern California (USC) gynecologist George Tyndall has been found dead at his Los Angeles home, according to his lawyer Leonard Levine. Tyndall, who was accused of sexually abusing hundreds of women, was discovered in his bed by a close friend who was unable to reach him by phone. There is no evidence of foul play or suicide, but an autopsy is expected to be performed by the coroner's office. Tyndall was due to stand trial on 27 criminal counts of sexual misconduct between 2009 and 2016 at USC's student health center. He had pleaded not guilty to the charges and was free on bond while awaiting a trial date.

Hundreds of women have accused Tyndall of sexual misconduct, but some cases fell outside the statute of limitations or lacked sufficient evidence. USC settled with over 700 women for $852 million in 2021, while another settlement of $215 million was reached in a class-action lawsuit involving 18,000 women who were treated by Tyndall. These settlements were granted regardless of whether the women formally accused Tyndall of harassment or assault. Tyndall, who lost his medical license in 2019, denied the allegations and signed the settlement without admitting any wrongdoing.

The allegations against Tyndall first came to light in 2018 when a Los Angeles Times investigation revealed complaints of sexual misconduct dating back to the 1990s. However, he was only suspended from USC in 2016 after a nurse reported him to a rape crisis center. Tyndall resigned the following year with a large payout from the university. The delay in bringing criminal charges against Tyndall has been criticized by the lead counsel in the civil case, John Manly, who represents some of Tyndall's accusers. He blames former and current district attorneys for the delays, which he says have caused further trauma to the victims.

Tyndall's death means he will not face trial for the alleged sexual abuse, and some of his accusers feel that he has escaped accountability. USC officials have acknowledged their failure to act on complaints made against Tyndall but deny any deliberate cover-up. The university's president at the time, C. Max Nikias, resigned in 2018 following the scandal.
