GOP Lawmakers Deny Revenge: Pelosi Denies Breaking Promise in Speaker Vote

07:51 08.10.2023

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has denied making any promises to support Representative Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., as he faced a vote to oust him as House speaker. In an interview with FOX 11 Los Angeles, Pelosi stated that she never made a promise to help McCarthy remain as speaker and that the decision was made by Democratic members. McCarthy lost the speaker's position this week after a vote led by a group of hardliners in the Republican conference. Eight Republicans and every Democrat voted together to remove McCarthy. McCarthy blamed Democrats for his ouster, claiming that Pelosi had promised to support him. However, Pelosi cited several reasons for the Democratic vote, including McCarthy's support for former President Donald Trump after the January 6th Capitol riot and the Republican-led impeachment inquiry into President Biden. McCarthy has since announced that he will not run for speaker again and denied reports of his resignation from Congress. Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., has temporarily replaced McCarthy until a permanent speaker is voted in next week. McHenry's first action as speaker pro-tempore was to evict Pelosi from her private Capitol office, a move that was described as retaliation by some. However, GOP lawmakers clarified that the eviction was due to the office being reserved for the immediately preceding speaker. Pelosi's eviction was followed by Steny Hoyer, D-Md., being removed from his hideaway office. House Republican lawmakers denied that the evictions were an act of revenge and stated that it was simply a matter of the new speaker needing to move in. They also suggested that as the offices are limited, one eviction leads to another. Ohio GOP Rep. Warren Davidson agreed with the decision to remove Pelosi, stating that it was a good decision. Davidson and other Republicans deferred to McHenry for the reasoning behind the evictions and noted that it could be a test case to determine the limits of the speaker pro-tempore's power. Pelosi's office did not immediately respond to requests for comment, while Hoyer's office declined to comment on the eviction.
