NYC Mayor Adams Urges Migrants to Stay Out, But Many Ignore Him

01:45 10.10.2023

New York City Mayor Eric Adams recently completed a four-day tour of Latin America, where he made an effort to discourage migrants from making their way to New York City. Adams visited Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, and the Darien Gap, a dangerous jungle region between Panama and Colombia that serves as a transit point for migrants heading to the US-Mexico border. During his tour, Adams expressed that there is no more room in New York and called for a "decompression strategy" to alleviate the burden on the city. Despite his warnings, migrants remain determined to reach New York City.

According to The New York Times, more than a dozen migrants bound for the US expressed that Adams' comments would not deter them. Johanna del Valle Acosta, a mother of three from Venezuela, stated that Adams is defending his country as mayor, but migrants are good people who want to work. Carlos Gabriel Hern??ndez, who had previously attempted to cross the Darien Gap with his family, said that they still plan to reach New York. He questioned how one can tell someone not to follow their American dream.

The US State Department has sent several delegations to the Darien Gap region to discourage migration, but these efforts have often resulted in more migrants embarking on the dangerous journey. Adams acknowledged the limits of his influence, recognizing that his calls will not change the minds of all those wishing to migrate. He emphasized that there is no one magic solution to the immigration crisis, but sitting back and waiting for a solution will only worsen the issue.

During his trip to Mexico City, Adams spoke with Jhonatan Antony Vel??squez Diaz, a Venezuelan migrant who traveled for 33 days with his wife and 6-month-old daughter. Despite being robbed at gunpoint during the journey, Diaz's friends in New York assured him that there are job opportunities available. Adams mentioned that around 800,000 immigrants from the state of Puebla currently live in New York City, which has had to accommodate over 120,000 more asylum seekers in the past year.

Not all migrants share the same optimism about their prospects in New York City. Henry Aguilar, who was traveling through the jungle with his family, received a voice message from a friend who had been unable to find work in the city. As a result, Aguilar's family is now planning to head to Texas instead. Another migrant, Ra??l Alfredo Chica, headed to the US after his wood shop business in Quito was decimated by the COVID-19 pandemic. He was later arrested and detained in Texas, but his wife still wants to go to New York.

Mayor Adams flew by helicopter to the Caribbean coast of Colombia, making it his final stop on the tour. He wore an olive-drab outfit and aviator sunglasses, giving a military-like appearance. Surrounded by heavy security, Adams alluded to the difficult conditions in New York and called for efforts to counter the false hopes and promises that migrants receive about the city. However, most migrants interviewed during the trip remained undeterred by Adams' remarks.

Adams acknowledged the uncertain impact of his deterrence efforts but emphasized the need for countries to work together to address global displacement. He enlisted local news outlets during his tour to spread his message and combat misinformation about easy living conditions and employment opportunities in New York. Despite his efforts, the determination of migrants to seek a better future remains strong.

Overall, Adams' tour of Latin America aimed to discourage migrants from heading to New York City due to limited resources and the overwhelming strain on the city's infrastructure. However, migrants remain determined to pursue their American dream, highlighting the complexity of the immigration crisis and the challenges faced by both the migrants and the cities they hope to reach.
