New Jersey Democratic Senator Robert Menendez, who is already facing corruption charges, has now been accused of acting as a foreign agent for Egypt. The new indictment, filed by New York federal prosecutors on Thursday, alleges that Menendez and his wife Nadine provided "sensitive US government information" that benefited Egypt's government.

Menendez and his wife were previously accused of bribery, to which they pleaded not guilty. The couple allegedly accepted bribes of cash, gold, payments towards a home mortgage, and a luxury vehicle from three New Jersey businessmen. During a search of their New Jersey home last year, investigators found $480,000 in cash hidden throughout the residence, as well as 13 bars of gold bullion worth an estimated $155,000.

The new indictment accuses Menendez of using his influence and power to breach his official duty in ways that benefited the government of Egypt. While serving on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which he has now stepped down from, he allegedly encouraged fellow senators to lift a hold on $300 million in aid to Egypt. Additionally, prosecutors claim that he provided sensitive US government information to the Egyptian government.

Prosecutors have stated that Menendez acted as an unregistered agent of the Egyptian government, engaging in a conspiracy to act as a foreign agent. The indictment includes four counts against Menendez, who will face trial on corruption charges in May.

The senator's alleged actions were facilitated by co-defendant Wael Hana, who arranged meetings between Menendez and Egyptian officials. In return for his assistance, Hana put Nadine Menendez on the payroll of a company he controlled.

Despite these charges, Menendez has refused calls to resign. His lawyer has not responded to requests for comment.
