Shooting at State Fair of Texas: Suspect arrested, fairgrounds evacuated

22:02 14.10.2023

The State Fair of Texas in Dallas was evacuated on Saturday night after a shooting incident, as reported by the Dallas Police Department. The shooting took place just before 8 p.m., and although details are limited due to the ongoing situation, the police have confirmed that one suspect is now in custody. The Dallas City Council member, Adam R. Bazaldua, stated that the City Manager, T.C. Broadnax, informed him that three people were injured in the shooting, which originated from a conflict between two individuals who knew each other. Bazaldua expressed his concerns regarding the ease of carrying firearms, stating that "permit-less carry" legislation makes it easier for senseless acts of gun violence to occur. He called for meaningful gun legislation to ensure public safety.

The State Fair of Texas also issued an Emergency Order, instructing fairgoers to evacuate the premises. The fair's official Twitter account posted an alert, notifying the public about the shooting and urging them to avoid the area. The Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) Rail system suffered delays due to the incident, but additional trains were added and shuttle buses were made available to accommodate passengers. DART personnel were present in the area to provide assistance.

This unfortunate incident follows two random acts of violence that occurred in the Fair Park area just days before the fair's opening, resulting in two fatalities. In response to these incidents, fair officials implemented new safety measures this year, including mandatory weapons detection screenings and bag searches for all attendees.

The extent of injuries in the recent shooting at the fair is currently unknown, as the investigation is still ongoing. The fair, which saw a record-breaking attendance of over 2.5 million people last year, draws massive crowds, with weekends frequently surpassing 100,000 attendees. Located in Fair Park, southeast of downtown Dallas, the fair was scheduled to run until the following weekend.

As the situation develops, further updates will be provided.
