Democrat Sen Bob Menendez accused of acting as a foreign agent in superseding indictment

05:49 15.10.2023

In a newly released indictment, Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey, a Democrat, is facing an additional charge of acting as a foreign agent. The indictment alleges that Menendez provided sensitive U.S. government information and took other steps to secretly aid the Egyptian government. This charge comes on top of previous charges in a federal bribery scheme, in which Menendez and his wife, Nadine, along with three other New Jersey businessmen, were accused of accepting bribes in exchange for using Menendez's power and influence as a senator to benefit the Arab Republic of Egypt.

Menendez has a history of opposing Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) reforms, according to Senate records. He blocked a bipartisan-led effort in 2020 to create stricter penalties regulating the influence of foreign entities on the U.S. government. The bill, called the Foreign Agents Disclosure and Registration Enhancement Act of 2019, aimed to boost disclosure of foreign lobbying campaigns to the public. Menendez argued that more comprehensive reforms were needed before passing any new tools or regulations.

In addition, Menendez also actively fought against another bill, called the PAID OFF Act, which sought to close loopholes in FARA and foreign lobbying disclosure. The bill would have made it more difficult for unregistered foreign agents to lobby in the U.S. Menendez's opposition to these reforms has drawn criticism, with Republican Representative August Pfluger stating that it is particularly concerning given the charges against Menendez.

According to the superseding indictment filed by a grand jury in Manhattan, Menendez and others, being public officials, corruptly demanded and received something of value in return for being influenced in the performance of an official act. The indictment alleges that Menendez sought non-public information from the State Department regarding the number and nationality of persons serving at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, after having a meeting with unidentified Egyptian officials in his Senate office. The information was deemed highly sensitive and could pose operational security concerns if disclosed to a foreign government or made public.

Menendez has denied the new charges and insisted that he has always been loyal to the United States. He has stepped down temporarily from his post as chairman on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee until the matter is resolved.

The charges against Menendez are significant, as they involve allegations of acting as a foreign agent and accepting bribes to benefit a foreign government. The bills that Menendez opposed would have established stricter regulations for disclosing foreign lobbying and created harsher penalties for misstatements, aiming to prevent foreign entities from influencing U.S. policymakers.

As the case against Menendez unfolds, the public will be watching closely to see how these allegations impact his political career and whether he is able to present a successful defense against the charges.
