NASA Launches Mission to Discover Precious Gems on Mysterious Metal Asteroid

09:19 15.10.2023

NASA's long-awaited mission to explore the mysterious metal asteroid known as 16 Psyche is set to launch on Friday, after being postponed due to unfavorable weather conditions. The spacecraft, named Falcon Heavy and built by Elon Musk's SpaceX, is expected to take seven years to reach the asteroid, which is located between Mars and Jupiter. NASA hopes to uncover valuable gems such as diamonds and rubies during the mission.

At a press conference, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson expressed his excitement about the potential discoveries. "I hope we might find diamonds and rubies on that asteroid," he said. The spacecraft will embark on its 4-billion-mile journey at 10:19 a.m. from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and is scheduled to land in Utah upon its return to Earth.

In May 2026, the spacecraft will use Mars' gravity to slingshot itself toward the asteroid, ultimately reaching its destination by 2030. Once there, it will spend 26 months in orbit, capturing images and recording the asteroid's topography. Scientists believe that 16 Psyche, which was first discovered in 1852 by Italian astronomer Annibale de Gasparis, may be the core of an early planetesimal that lost its outer shell in violent collisions billions of years ago.

While primarily made of iron and nickel, the asteroid's metal composition has captivated scientists. NASA scientists have categorized it as "metal rich," making it distinct from other asteroids that have been explored. The mission to 16 Psyche marks the first time humankind will have the opportunity to visit a metallic object, opening the door to a wealth of new discoveries about the universe.

While the asteroid will not be mined, the mission will provide valuable insights for future space extraction endeavors. It will give space agencies a glimpse into the potential resources that may be available for extraction on other celestial bodies.

Henry Stone, Psyche's project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, expressed his team's excitement and readiness for the mission. "The team has worked tirelessly to prepare the spacecraft for its journey to a one-of-a-kind asteroid," he said. "We look forward to the launch and, more importantly, to accomplishing the mission's objectives, marking yet another historic voyage of scientific discovery."

As the launch of this groundbreaking mission approaches, the anticipation of what lies ahead on 16 Psyche grows. The world eagerly awaits the insights and discoveries that will come from this extraordinary endeavor.
