NASA's long-awaited mission to explore the mysterious metal asteroid known as 16 Psyche is set to launch on Friday, after being postponed due to unfavorable weather conditions. The spacecraft, named Falcon Heavy and built by Elon Musk's SpaceX, is expected to take seven years to reach the asteroid, which is located between Mars and Jupiter. Once there, it will spend 26 months in orbit, capturing images and recording the asteroid's topography. Scientists believe that 16 Psyche, which was first discovered in 1852 by Italian astronomer Annibale de Gasparis, may be the core of an early planetesimal that lost its outer shell in violent collisions billions of years ago.

While primarily made of iron and nickel, the asteroid's metal composition has captivated scientists. NASA scientists have categorized it as "metal rich," making it distinct from other asteroids that have been explored.
