Texas Fair Shooting Suspect Charged; Fair to Reopen Sunday Amid Chaotic Aftermath

20:34 15.10.2023

Dallas police have identified the suspect in Saturday night's shooting at the State Fair of Texas as 22-year-old Cameron Turner. Turner has been charged with three counts of aggravated assault after the chaotic incident, which left three people injured and caused panic among fairgoers. Videos posted on social media captured the frantic aftermath of the shooting, with one video taken from the top of the Ferris wheel showing large crowds rushing towards the exit after shots were fired at the fairground food court.

Another video shared on TikTok showed the inside of the rodeo at the fairgrounds, where an announcement over the public address system warned the crowd of an active shooter outside and called for emergency medical technicians. Some rodeo spectators ignored the warning and hopped the fence to escape across the rodeo arena, even though there were bulls out of their pens.

Police stated that Turner opened fire and fled the scene before being apprehended a short distance away. The three victims, two adult males, and one adult female, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were in stable condition. A gun was recovered at the scene.

In response to the shooting, Dallas District 7 City Councilmember Adam Bazaldua claimed that the incident was sparked by a conflict between two people who knew each other. He also criticized Texas' permit-less carry law, stating that it makes it easier for senseless acts of gun violence to occur in the state. Dallas Mayor Eric L. Johnson expressed outrage at the violence and emphasized that such behavior would not be tolerated.

Following the shooting, the State Fair of Texas announced its plans to reopen the fairgrounds at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. However, the fair's reputation for safety has been called into question, as two random acts of violence occurred in the Fair Park area in the days leading up to the fair's opening.

This year marked the 137th year of the State Fair of Texas, a beloved event attended by more than 2.5 million people in 2022. In an effort to enhance safety, the fair implemented new measures, including mandatory weapons detection systems and bag searches for all attendees. While the fair does not allow unlicensed gun owners to enter with firearms, those with valid handgun licenses are permitted to carry concealed weapons, excluding locations prohibited by law. Open-carry, however, is not permitted. The fair's policy is intended to strike a balance between ensuring the safety and comfort of all attendees.

At present, it is unclear whether the fair will reopen on Sunday or remain closed. The identities of the suspect and victims have not been released by the Dallas Police Department. Meanwhile, authorities continue to investigate the incident and work towards preventing future acts of violence at the State Fair of Texas.
