Biden mulls Israel trip as Gaza invasion fears rise

04:25 16.10.2023

President Joe Biden is considering a trip to Israel in the midst of ongoing Israeli bombardments of the Gaza Strip, according to a senior US administration official. The possibility of the trip has raised concerns about the potential for a wider war and the humanitarian consequences it could bring. The Israeli bombardment has already resulted in the deaths of at least 2,750 Palestinians, with civilian casualties mounting. Biden's visit could be seen as a provocative move by Iran and could be viewed as insensitive by Arab nations.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has been traveling in the Middle East in an attempt to prevent the conflict between Israel and Hamas from escalating into a regional war. The official who spoke about Biden's potential travel plans did so on the condition of anonymity.

Biden has made his strongest public statements yet in an effort to restrain Israel. In an interview with CBS's 60 Minutes, he warned Israel against reoccupying Gaza, stating, "I think it'd be a big mistake... What happened in Gaza, in my view, is Hamas, and the extreme elements of Hamas don't represent all the Palestinian people. And I think that it would be a mistake for Israel to occupy Gaza again."

Despite his criticism of Israel's actions, Biden and his administration have not explicitly condemned the country or its bombing campaign. Instead, they have called for the provision of humanitarian aid and supplies to the conflict zone. Biden expressed confidence that Israel would adhere to the rules of war and allow access to essential resources for the innocent people in Gaza.

The possibility of Biden's visit comes at a critical time as Israel is considering a full-scale ground invasion into Gaza. The Israeli government recently ordered one million people living in the northern area of the Gaza Strip to evacuate within 24 hours, further escalating tensions. However, Israel denies carrying out an airstrike that killed 70 Palestinians and injured 200 as they attempted to follow the evacuation orders.

Blinken stressed that while Israel has the right to defend itself against Hamas attacks, it must also consider the cost to civilian life during its counteroffensive missions. The US government has appointed David Satterfield, a former ambassador to Lebanon and Turkey, to lead efforts in providing humanitarian assistance to vulnerable individuals in the region.

The potential visit by President Biden to Israel raises questions about the US stance on the conflict and the ongoing violence in Gaza. As tensions continue to escalate, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution that minimizes the loss of life and suffering.
