Ex-Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman ends donations to University of Penn, condemns school's 'moral relativism' on Hamas

The University of Pennsylvania is facing backlash from prominent donors and trustees over its alleged silence in response to the recent attacks by Hamas against Israel. Jon Huntsman, former governor of Utah and ambassador to China, has announced that his family's charity, the Huntsman Foundation, will no longer donate to UPenn due to its failure to condemn the attacks. In a letter to UPenn President Liz Magill, Huntsman criticized the university for its "moral relativism" and accused it of becoming "almost unrecognizable." He labeled the university's silence as antisemitism and called for outright condemnation of Hamas. Another top donor, private equity billionaire Marc Rowan, has demanded that Magill and Scott Bok, the chairman of the board of trustees, resign for their handling of the situation. Rowan accused Magill of embracing antisemitism and allowing UPenn's reputation to be associated with a pro-Palestinian literary festival. He criticized the university for its delay in denouncing Hamas and its failure to protect Jewish students and spaces. Some of the speakers at the festival, including Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, have been accused of making antisemitic statements in the past. Magill has issued a statement acknowledging that the university should have acted faster in disavowing the festival and condemning Hamas. She explicitly condemned Hamas for its "terrorist assault" on Israel and expressed solidarity with the Jewish community. The controversy at UPenn is reminiscent of the turmoil at Harvard, where student groups blamed Israel for the Hamas attacks and the university's president initially declined to disavow the groups' letter. Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers criticized Harvard for not immediately condemning Hamas. Hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman demanded that Harvard release a list of group members who co-signed the letter and enlisted the support of business executives who pledged not to hire individuals associated with those groups. Ken Griffin, founder of Citadel, urged Harvard to defend Israel more forcefully. The criticism from donors and trustees highlights the challenges faced by universities in navigating conflicts and controversies related to international conflicts and political issues.
