Jim Jordan perseveres, secures GOP nomination amidst House speaker chaos

19:33 18.10.2023

In a chaotic battle for speakership, House Republicans voted on Friday to nominate Rep. Jim Jordan as speaker of the House. Jordan, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, secured the nomination with 124 votes, but he still fell more than 90 votes short of the 217 needed to become speaker in a vote on the House floor. A secret ballot vote revealed that 55 House Republicans would not support Jordan on the House floor for speaker, further complicating his path to the position. Jordan expressed confidence in his ability to bring the team together and spoke about his nomination as he entered the candidate forum on Friday. However, he had previously withdrawn from the speaker race and had pledged to vote for Rep. Steve Scalise if Scalise earned the nomination. Scalise later withdrew from the race after failing to secure enough votes. The speaker contest has been disorderly since the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, and former President Donald Trump has endorsed Jordan as a candidate, which could have both positive and negative effects on his chances. Some members expressed doubts about Jordan's ability to unite the party, and Rep. Steve Womack warned that the chaotic situation could have consequences in the 2024 election. The pressure is on for Republicans to elect a new speaker as the House needs to provide aid to Israel after recent attacks and pass funding legislation to prevent a government shutdown. While Jordan's nomination has been a significant development, the ultimate outcome of the speaker's race remains uncertain, with other potential candidates waiting in the wings.
