Rolling Stones' 'Hackney Diamonds' review: A nostalgic, stomping victory lap

09:16 20.10.2023

The Rolling Stones surprised fans at their album release party for Hackney Diamonds with an unforgettable performance on Thursday evening at New York City's Racket NYC venue. Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Ronnie Wood took to the stage to play songs from the band's first album of new material in 18 years. The event drew a star-studded crowd, including famous fans such as Chris Rock, Jimmy Fallon, Daniel Craig, and his Oscar-winning actress wife, Rachel Weisz.

The Stones kicked off the night with seven songs from the new album, including "Angry," "Whole Wide World," and "Bite My Head Off." The highlight of the evening was when Lady Gaga joined them on stage to perform their single "Sweet Sounds of Heaven." This track, featured on the album, also includes a collaboration with Stevie Wonder. The crowd was on their feet as the legendary band delivered past classics like "Shattered," "Jumpin' Jack Flash," and "Tumbling Dice."

"Hackney Diamonds," a 12-track album, showcases the band's ability to blend their classic sound with fresh elements. Two tracks on the album feature the band's late drummer, Charlie Watts, including "Mess It Up" and "Live By the Sword," which also includes former Stones member Bill Wyman on bass. The album also boasts guest appearances from Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder, as well as piano contributions from Elton John on tracks Get Close and "Live By the Sword." Paul McCartney's bassline can be heard on "Bite My Head Off."

This album is a significant milestone for The Rolling Stones, as it is their first album of original material since 2005's "A Bigger Bang." In the intervening years, pop superstar Taylor Swift has released ten studio albums, while the Stones focused on touring and playing their classic hits. However, Hackney Diamonds signals a return to their roots and proves that they haven't lost their edge.

Produced by Grammy-winning producer Andrew Watt, known for his work with artists such as Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, Hackney Diamonds captures the essence of classic Stones. The album feels like a solid victory lap and a celebration of their storied career. Despite their age, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards show no signs of slowing down, delivering powerful performances on tracks like "Angry." The album maintains a nostalgic feel, with tracks like Get Close and "Whole Wide World" evoking the rebellious spirit of their earlier hits.

While some tracks, like the country-tinged Dreamy Skies and "Driving Me Too Hard," showcase a wistful and weary side of the band, it is on "Sweet Sounds of Heaven" that they truly transcend. Clocking in at over seven minutes, this gospel-blues track features powerful vocals from Jagger and the soulful contributions of Lady Gaga and Stevie Wonder, taking the Stones to new heights.

With guest appearances from music icons such as Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, and Paul McCartney, Hackney Diamonds solidifies its status as an event record. The band has proven that they can still create music that resonates with both longtime fans and a new generation of listeners. The album is a testament to their enduring legacy and cements their place in rock history.
