Cincinnati Zoo Employee Hospitalized After Venomous Rattlesnake Bite

00:22 22.10.2023

A Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden employee found herself in a dangerous situation on Thursday when she was bitten by a highly venomous rattlesnake. The incident occurred at around 4 p.m. in a "behind the scenes area" of the zoo that is not accessible to the public. The employee, who works in the reptile house, was quickly taken to the hospital and is currently in stable condition. According to Michelle Curley, the zoo's communications director, the bite was partial and did not require antivenom. She assured the public that there was never any risk to guests.

The eastern diamondback rattlesnake, responsible for the attack, is known for its intimidating rattle and venomous bite. It is the largest rattlesnake in the world, with some adults reaching an impressive 8 feet in length. This particular snake is also the most venomous in North America. Its venom contains a hemotoxin that can kill red blood cells and cause tissue damage, potentially proving fatal to humans. The Smithsonian's National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute explains that when threatened, the eastern diamondback rattlesnake sounds its rattle as a final warning before striking, and it can strike as far as two-thirds of its body length.

Interestingly, this incident comes just one month after an Amazon driver in Florida was attacked by the same species of rattlesnake. The delivery driver, unaware of the massive snake lurking near the front door, was bitten while dropping off a package. She was rushed to the hospital in a "very serious condition" but ultimately survived the ordeal. Monet Robinson, the Amazon driver, shared that she experienced significant pain but had the support of her family as she recovered.

The Cincinnati Zoo employee's hospitalization adds to a list of unfortunate incidents involving rattlesnake bites. Last year, an 80-year-old snake researcher tragically lost his life after being bitten by a rattlesnake. Additionally, in 2022, a 6-year-old boy passed away several days after being bitten by a rattlesnake while on a family bike ride near Colorado Springs. These cases serve as a reminder of the potential danger that these creatures pose.

The eastern diamondback rattlesnake is a top predator in the food chain, playing an essential role in its ecosystem. While deaths from rattlesnake bites are rare due to the availability of antivenom, they still occur. Authorities advise against applying tourniquets or ice to the wound, as these actions can worsen the damage. Instead, injured parties are encouraged to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest hospital.

The employee's hospitalization highlights the risks associated with working closely with venomous animals. The incident took place in a "behind-the-scenes area" where employees handle and care for the reptiles. The Cincinnati Fire Department was called to the zoo, and law enforcement responded to the scene to ensure the safety of the staff and visitors. The exact circumstances surrounding the attack remain unclear, and the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden has yet to provide a comment on the incident.

This news serves as a reminder of the dedication and bravery displayed by zoo employees who often work in close proximity to dangerous animals. The incident is a testament to the importance of following proper safety protocols to minimize the risks associated with working with venomous creatures. As the employee continues her recovery, the incident will likely prompt a review of safety procedures to ensure the well-being of both the employees and the animals they care for at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden.
