Mistaken Display: Michigan State Apologizes for Hitler Image in Pregame Quiz

04:41 22.10.2023

Michigan State University issued an apology on Saturday night after displaying a picture of Adolf Hitler on the videoboard during a pregame quiz before their football game against the University of Michigan. The controversial image appeared on the screen at Spartan Stadium, featuring a trivia question asking where Hitler was born. The incident sparked outrage among fans and quickly gained traction on social media.

The image of Hitler and a brief mention of Austria, his birthplace, flashed on the video boards for a brief period of time before kickoff. Fans in attendance, as well as those following the game remotely, were taken aback by the inappropriate content. The offensive image was shared on various social media platforms, leading to widespread condemnation and disbelief.

Michigan State University spokesman, Matt Larson, addressed the incident, acknowledging the grievous error and expressing the university's regret. Larson stated, "MSU is aware that inappropriate content by a third-party source was displayed on the video board prior to the start of tonight's football game. We are deeply sorry for the content that was displayed, as this is not representative of our institutional values."

Furthermore, Larson assured the public that the university would take immediate action to rectify the situation. He declared that Michigan State will no longer utilize the services of the third-party source responsible for the offensive content. Additionally, the university plans to implement more rigorous screening and approval procedures for all video board content in the future to prevent such incidents from occurring again.

The trivia quiz, which features various questions and content, has been a regular pregame feature at Michigan State University. The incident with Hitler's image, however, has raised concerns about the source of the content and the potential for further inappropriate material to be displayed. The university's assertion to strengthen screening measures aims to address these concerns and prevent any future occurrences of offensive content being shown on the video boards.

In the midst of the controversy surrounding the pregame incident, the football game itself proved to be a lopsided affair. The University of Michigan dominated the game, securing a commanding 49-0 victory over Michigan State. This result served as a stark contrast to last year's matchup, where the Spartans emerged victorious and their players were suspended for their celebratory actions following the win.

Despite the disappointment on the field, Michigan State University is now focused on addressing the fallout from the pregame incident. The administration's swift apology and commitment to implementing stricter content screening procedures demonstrate their dedication to upholding the university's values and ensuring similar incidents do not occur in the future.
