Storm Babet causes widespread flooding and ice, prompting further warnings

The EA has specifically mentioned major rivers in affected areas, including the River Severn, as potential flood risks until Wednesday. Despite severe flood warnings being lifted, the agency anticipates more flood alerts for the worst-affected areas. The continuous rainfall has led to river flooding along the River Severn, which is expected to persist until Wednesday. In addition, parts of England may experience further flooding from rivers and surface water due to heavy rain on Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to the EA, approximately 1,250 properties in England have been flooded, while around 30,000 properties have been protected from flooding. These numbers highlight the scale of the ongoing crisis caused by Storm Babet. The devastating consequences of the storm have unfortunately resulted in loss of life. Maureen Gilbert, 83, was found dead after her home in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, was hit by flooding. Her son, Paul Gilbert, made the heartbreaking discovery and expressed his shock and grief at the tragic loss of his mother. Wendy Taylor, 57, also lost her life after being swept into the Water of Lee in Glen Esk. Her family paid tribute to her as a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, emphasizing the profound impact she had on those around her.

In Scotland, where Storm Babet caused significant damage, First Minister Humza Yousaf plans to visit Brechin in Angus to assess the aftermath of the river bursting its banks, which led to extensive flooding in the area. The storm had a particularly destructive impact on Angus and Aberdeenshire, prompting cleanup efforts and repairs for those affected.

The Met Office has issued warnings for icy conditions overnight, which are expected to remain in place in Scotland and northern England until 9 am today. However, there is some hope for those affected by the flooding, as the Met Office spokesperson Dave Britton noted that Monday's more settled weather could provide a respite and an opportunity for recovery. Nevertheless, Britton also mentioned that further rain is expected during the week, indicating that the unsettled conditions are likely to continue.

The devastation caused by Storm Babet has claimed several lives. In Shropshire, a man in his 60s tragically died after being caught in fast-flowing floodwater in Cleobury Mortimer. Additionally, a falling tree resulted in the death of a 56-year-old driver near Forfar in Angus. Furthermore, there is an ongoing search in Aberdeenshire for a man reportedly trapped in a vehicle submerged in floodwater.

The situation remains critical as the potential for more flooding looms over the affected areas. Authorities, emergency services, and local communities continue their efforts to assess and address the damage caused by Storm Babet.
