Mary Lou Retton Returns Home After Pneumonia Battle

20:39 23.10.2023

Olympic gymnastics legend Mary Lou Retton, 55, has been discharged from the hospital and is now recovering at home after battling a rare form of pneumonia. The news of her improved health was shared by her daughter, McKenna Kelley, in an Instagram post on Monday. She expressed gratitude for the overwhelming love and support they had received during this challenging time. Retton's recovery comes after a scary setback she experienced while in the ICU, according to her other daughter, Shayla Kelley Schrepfer, in a video posted on Instagram last Thursday.

The Kelley family had started a fundraiser for Retton as she did not have medical insurance to cover her medical bills. The response was overwhelming, with over 8,300 people donating nearly $450,000. The US Olympic & Paralympic Committee also offered their assistance. Retton, who won five medals during the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, earned the nickname "America's Sweetheart" and was inducted into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame in 1997.

Retton's hospitalization was a result of pneumonia, which is an infection of the lungs that can cause mild to severe illness in people of all ages. Those most at risk include adults older than 65, children younger than 5, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions.

During her stay in the ICU, Retton's condition was critical, and she initially required assistance to breathe. However, her progress was hampered by a setback, causing concern for her family and supporters. Her specific diagnosis has not been disclosed, but her daughters described the pneumonia as a "very rare" form.

Retton's return home brings relief and hope for her continued recovery. She rose to fame when she became the first American woman to win the individual all-around gold medal at the Olympics in 1984. In addition to her gold medal, she also earned silver as part of the U.S. women's gymnastics team and as an individual on vault, as well as bronze medals on the uneven bars and floor exercise. Since retiring in 1986, Retton has remained an iconic figure in American sports and even participated in ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" in 2018.
