Rep. Bowman of New York faces misdemeanor charge in fire alarm pulled in House office building

07:58 26.10.2023

Democratic congressman Jamaal Bowman from New York has been charged with a misdemeanor for triggering a fire alarm in a congressional building last month. The incident occurred as lawmakers were scrambling to pass a funding bill before a government shutdown deadline. Bowman has admitted to pulling the alarm and has stated that it was a mistake. He explained that he was in a rush to go and vote, and when he encountered a closed door, he wrongly believed that pulling the fire alarm lever would help him open it.

As a result of the false fire alarm, the House office building was evacuated for over an hour, causing disruption to the ongoing proceedings. At the time, House Democrats were working to delay a vote on the funding bill in order to review a bill that Republicans had abruptly released. Despite the interruption, the funding package was eventually approved with the support of most Republicans and almost all Democrats, including Bowman.

However, Republicans criticized Bowman for his actions and introduced a motion to censure him. Bryan Steil, the chairman of the Committee on House Administration, referred the case to Capitol Police, arguing that Bowman's explanation was merely an "excuse." Steil pointed out that Bowman had passed several police officers after pulling the alarm without alerting them about it.

Prosecutors have stated that Bowman will be treated like anyone else who violates the law. He has agreed to pay the maximum fine of $1,000 and complete three months of probation. If he successfully completes probation and provides a formal apology to Capitol Police, the charge will be withdrawn. In a statement, Bowman expressed gratitude for the quick resolution and stated that he takes responsibility for activating the fire alarm.

The incident, which caused an hour-long evacuation, resulted in frustration and inconvenience for lawmakers and staff. The building was reopened after Capitol Police determined that there was no immediate threat. Bowman's actions have raised concerns among both Democrats and Republicans, with some accusing him of deliberately attempting to disrupt the voting process.

Ultimately, Bowman hopes to put the incident behind him and move forward. He expressed his intention to pay the fine and is looking forward to having the charges ultimately dropped. He also criticized Republicans for attempting to distract from more pressing issues by focusing on this case. The congressman's case serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining the integrity and security of congressional buildings during critical legislative processes.
