Maine Police Warned About Robert Card's Threats Weeks Prior to Massacre: AP

01:00 29.10.2023

In a shocking turn of events, it has been revealed that the man responsible for the gruesome massacre in Lewiston, Maine, Robert Card, had been on the radar of state authorities as early as mid-September. Card, a US Army reservist, went on a shooting spree at a bowling alley and bar, killing at least 18 people and injuring 13 others. This incident has been described as the worst mass shooting in the history of the Pine Tree State.

Law enforcement officials have disclosed that they were alerted to Card's "veiled threats" after he targeted soldiers at a southern Maine National Guard Base in Saco. However, when authorities visited Card's residence, they were unable to locate him, and subsequently dropped their investigation. Saco Police Chief Jack Clements explained that extra patrols were deployed for two weeks, but Card never showed up. Chief Clements expressed his frustration, stating, "We never came in contact with this guy, never received any phone calls from the reserve center saying, 'Hey, we got somebody who was causing a problem.' We never got anything."

The Sagadahoc County Sheriff, Joel Merry, also took action after being informed by the Army Reserve about Card's threats. He sent a statewide awareness alert to every law enforcement agency in Maine, urging them to be on the lookout for Card. However, despite their efforts, Card could not be located.

The FBI, on the other hand, stated that they were not aware of any suspicious activity involving Card and did not receive any tips or information regarding him. The agency added that the background check system did not have any information that would have prohibited Card from legally purchasing firearms.

These revelations have raised concerns about the effectiveness of the surveillance and response systems in place to prevent such tragedies. The fact that Card was able to carry out the mass shooting despite being on the radar of authorities has left many questioning whether more could have been done to prevent this horrifying incident.

On Friday night, after a two-day search, Card was found dead in the back of a large tractor-trailer in the parking lot of the Maine Recycling Corporation, his former employer. The authorities determined that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Maine officials have been left grappling with the aftermath of this devastating event. The announcement of Card's death brought some relief to the community, but it does not erase the pain and loss suffered by the victims and their families. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding Card's actions and the response of law enforcement are ongoing, as the community seeks answers and grapples with the aftermath of this tragic event.
